I went on one of those super car drive days last Friday at Upper Heyford. It was a Christmas present from my kids.

I was to drive a Lamborghini, an Aston DB9 and a Ferrari but I saw that they had a beautiful 1968 GT500 Fastback so I swapped the Fezza for that.

Loved the Mustang and the instructor got me to push it on the track. Great fun even with no power steering and non servoed brakes.

As to the Aston and the Gallardo, I thought they were pretty meh! and I couldn't wait to get back into my own S550 :D

Honestly, my GT felt faster, handled better, stopped quicker and has a better interior.

Granted the two super cars were much older than mine but they certainly didn't feel prestige.

Just shows how much better cars are getting at lower price points!

Also just read this on PH and thought I was going a bit mental :p

Very different aint it, I drove a GTR and an R8 on a track day a few weeks before i picked my car up; The drive in both was very much 'Kick you in the back of the head' when changing gears than anything else. yes they're quick as fuck, but, could i drive one every day? Maybe not.

I've done similar............drove a Gallardo at Bruntingthorpe and certainly enjoyed it. The V10 wail at high revs certainly sounded nice and overtaking a few red prancing ponies was fun.....but I didn't get out and think "I wish I could afford one".

I also drove a DBS a few years later. Now, Aston Martin is probably my favourite car brand (my daughter even has Aston as a middle name!). Again, the V12 sounded great and felt quick enough but I got out and was shocked to discover I no longer lusted after it.

Perhaps, in both cases, it was because the ridiculous price of entry just doesn't seem worth it, to me at least.

The S550, on the other hand.......90% of the Aston's looks, arguably as good a sound (I still prefer a US V8 over any other engine configuration.....especially with a decent exhaust) and an interior that, again, was 90% as good as the Aston's......certainly beat the interior in looks, if not quite as good in finish....but add full leather to the Mustang doors and dash, add an alcantara roof and it'd equal that feel-good factor. And all this for less than a quarter of the price!

I still think the Mustang is the bargain of the decade :headbang:

I used to own an Aston V8 vantage... I was a nice car and I enjoyed owning it...

But the mustang is faster, got better brakes, quicker of the line, more comfortable, has a bigger boot, and can carry rear seat passengers...

On the other hand the Aston handled better, and had a nicer interior...

I sold my 10 year old Vantage, for just under what the brand new Mustang cost me..

Servicing and parts prices for the Aston were nothing short of Robbery without violence:paddle::paddle::crazy::rant:

When we were gossiping at Maidstone Centurion07 asked (between doughnuts) a really good question. If you were ordering a car today, what would you order? I'd order exactly the car I have.

Well I use my car now and then it's my toy, toys should be somthing you enjoy and can use as you want or there aint no point having it, for me I was unable to buy a car i wanted
So I built one and had fun doing it, if I could live with LHD I'd have got the car I wanted GT350R, nothing out there now could fill it's space in my garage or heart.

Hmm. If I could roll back the clocks knowing what I know now, I would have gone for the V8 version of what I have. At the time I ordered it simply wasn't an option for me but looking back I probably could have gone for it.

Don't get me wrong, I love my EB, it has a lot of benefits over the V8 & I'm really happy. I don't regret buying it & have no intention of changing it but if I could order again now that's what I would do.

No other car interests me!

^ .... this  I drove a 360 a few years back now (at Upper Heyford, coincidentally). Wow, what a car it was - and things have come on a lot since then so I can only imagine that a 458 would be mind-blowing ..... and a LaFerrari must be on another level entirely. Oh for that lottery win! :D
