I've always believed that you want as small a tire & wheel as you can use and still dead hook to save weight and rotating mass. To the OP, keep the 17x9's and run a 275 width drag radial.

Thanks for all the input. I did keep them and have the ET Street Rs at 305/45. They pretty much dead hook but on one pass with heavy power breaking they did spin slightly. I was still experimenting with launching the car. I also wasn't getting the best burnouts and it was a cold night. I'm done for the season so we'll how it goes on a converter next year.

I believe that too.

Or did, until I found out how much money you lose when the smaller set-up isn't enough. :frusty:

If X275 cars can do what they do on a 275, anyone on here should be fine with a 275. People love to blame tires when it comes to not hooking when they should be looking at their suspension.

I've had both wheels. Currently running the 10.5" wide wheel on a 325 tire. Cutting the best 60' it's ever done. Not saying the smaller wheel and tire couldn't do it... it just didn't on my car. But there's too many factors involved to blame just the wheel and tire. 1.36 60' on stock shocks and only a few bmr parts. Just placed a decent sized order from bmr again. So shooting for some 1.2* now.
Is the the 17x4.5 front with a 26" tire?

It also cost a lot more to upgrade suspension on top of a wheel/tire combo. You can do all the suspension work in the world and not get traction without some good rubber however on the flip side, you can stuff some big sticky tires on and immediately get better traction. Since you have to do tires first, it dawned on me to go bigger now vs smaller and fight with suspension to try and make smaller tires work. This is for street cars anyway. Fat tires just look good from the back :) If you are building a race car for a particular class and can afford all the suspension work up front then sure, build around the size tire you need to run.

That's not entirely a fair assessment. X275 cars yes have much more dialed in suspensions, But X275 races are also on an extremely sticky prepped track. They also stretch them on a very wide wheel, and also 15" wheels.

Not really a fair comparison to this post. Much easier and cheaper for us DD cars to add a wider tire for better traction than all the other work on a narrower tire to work the same.

X275 cars are also putting down a couple thousand horsepower. Most people here are putting down 400-700. I personally will never run anything larger than a 275 out back when drag racing. It's way cooler to run a good time on a small tire.

Who cares about cool? Its way easier to get down the track faster with a big tire especially in no prep racing or on the street.
