This is my first black car that i love to look clean. I usually run my car through those car washes that have the conveyor belt and have 2-3 workers ready to wipe your car down because there is one like a minute away from my house.

It works pretty great and gets my car really shiny but lately i have been noticing waterspots on my car, most significantly on the hood and a few on the door. I think some of them have been on there for a few months already.

I'm not too familiar with cleaning waterspots nor am i familiar with car detailing and all of the claybar stuff as i unfortunately just run through the car wash. Do you guys have any luck getting these things out? I'm afraid some of these are already permanently etched into my car.

You can try some quick detail spray to get them out. Walmart will have some in the automotive section, I use the meguiars ultimate quick detail. Use it after a wash while the car is clean. Just spray, wipe to spread, turn the microfiber towel over and buff. If the spots don't come out with the detailer spray, they probably etched the clear coat. In that case a light polish (by hand) should remove them.

I had a few that clay bar nor mild abrasive would get out. Some one said a vinegar solution helps, I followed google instructions to seemingly no avail. That was like 8 weeks ago and they are largely gone My guess is the vinegar solution broke it down and nature is doing the rest in time. Hope this helps.

This is a huge pain in the ass. I actually have these hard water spots on my windows. I've tried vinegar + water, alcohol, water + baking soda, and nothing works. Going to try claying and then scrubbing bubbles (for cleaning bath) + fine steel wool next.

Water spots tend to be mineral deposits that are left when city/well water is left to dry on your car, hence why most folks will try to detail their vehicle if it gets hit by a hose or a water sprinkler while driving. Most of the detailing companies have specific cleaners for water spots.

http://www.adamsforums.com/topic/15899-faq-how-do-i-remove-water-spots/
REMOVAL METHODS:
These processes are listed in order from least to most aggressive.

  • Start simple! For lighter spots something as simple as a complete wash or wipe down with Waterless Wash or Detail Spray and a microfiber towel may be enough to remedy the problem. As with any detailing process, always try the least aggressive/simplest method first.
  • White vinegar can be used for spots that are a little more stubborn and more mineral based. Soak a small area of a plush microfiber towel with the vinegar and wipe the problem area (after the area has been properly cleaned and dust removed) Perform this task out of direct sunlight to avoid complications. Be sure to reapply your preferred wax/sealant to the area as the vinegar will have degraded/removed any protection.
  • Claying can be very effective at removing water spots. The process remains unchanged from the usual claying process. Adequately lubricate the surface and move the clay back and forth over the area. Be sure to spend extra time working the spots from multiple angles to give the clay the best opportunity to grab the contamination. Repeat uses may be needed in some cases.

From then on, make sure you have a good layer of sealant and wax on your vehicle. That will make removing any sort of crap like water spots/bird shit/sap etc. much, much easier.

Man isn't this true! I have them all over my wind shield, been there since I took it home from the dealership. Tried vinegar and it didn't do anything, gonna have to try some other methods

Have you tried this? It takes a bit of elbow grease but it works.

3m scratch remover will take it off paint. I had a few on my car when it was delivered. Windows I use Maguire's spot remover. It works but requires a little pressure to get them off.

Razor blade? That sounds pretty tedious and risky isn't it?
Not at all, I've been doing it for years and its easy, fast and safe. Spray the surface down liberally, and then pretend you are shaving your face. Heres a vid for more detail if you want [ame]

The more important question is why are you taking a black car through a car wash where it gets dried by the same towels that they use on everyone else's cars? That's just inviting all kinds of swirl marks and scratches. At least find a touchless wash where you can dry it off yourself

I usually avoid a car wash if I can help it. Touchless is better, but I know they're hard to find. But NEVER, and I mean NEVER let those clowns touch your car with those nasty ass towels. You don't know what they've had on them, if they've dropped them on the ground, and the water streaks and spots they leave make the car worse that when you got there.

I have microfiber and waffle towels in the car at all times, along with Meguiar's Ultimate Quick Detailer. Spray this stuff on the car as you dry it. It helps to disperse water and gives an awesome between wax shine.

Oh yeah, and NEVER let those guys near your car. :)

My buyers remorse used to be getting a V6 Mustang....now its just getting a black car.
Although that post-wash shine is sexy for like 2 days tho.

I may have to find a touchless car wash now.
