I do not care for vettes much. I must admit though, the new ones are growing on me. I live very close to Makmulkin Chevy. I'm told they are the 2nd largest vette dealer in the country. They have 5 or 6 Z06 sitting in the showroom. I was told about 1 minute into the conversation they were all 20% off sticker (2016) That put most of them in the low 80s. As someone with an eye out for a GT350R... given the admins the vette is about 10000 less. Short of no place for the kids, it's kind of a no Brainer.

The Z06 is a great car. The 8 speed auto has a horrible list of issues reported. The 7 speed Manual is much better IMHO. If you plan to track it, the R is a better track car. After 2 laps heat soak will sap the power of the Z06.

I owned a C7 and it really should not be in the same category as the Mustang. The C7 is a sports car. The Mustang is a pony car. The C7 is like a dancer and the GT350 is a street fighter.

The C7 is not without it's share of complaints. The steering is good but does not relay the road feel. The paint on the C7 is horrible. Crazy orange peel. They are building a new paint plant that should be ready for the 18's.The DI system allows more power but carbon buildup is a known issue with DI engines. Only time will tell how that impacts performance as engines get more miles.

I never drove them back to back. I'm more eager to take my GT350 out on long drives. It holds corners better than i could have imagined. I'm guessing the magnetic shocks explain that.

Funny you mentioned the paint. It really was terrible. Only one left was a standard. Rest were auto. Don't want an auto

If I had been local to MacMulkin when they announced their 20% of sale I'd be driving an Arctic White 2LT Z51 with 7MT, MSRC and PDR right now. That was 57K for a car with an MSRP of 74K. I just couldn't bring myself to buy sight unseen.

I never seen a GT350 in person until mine was delivered :)

Comparing the Z51 to the GT350 was an easy flip for me. I have no regrets.

I do love the C7. I had no complaints other than it was super low and pretty uncomfortable. But for a weekender, I was ok with that.

And while I had love for the C7, I've got unbridled passion for my GT350.

Agree with the comment above. Two different types of cars.

Based on that price, they probably had Z07 Packs too. That's not a bad price but based on the overheating issues (which GM finally said "oopsie" on recently), and the sheer cost of ownership, it's not in my wheel house.

The 8L90 I thought was horrible. It does shift relatively fast but there's definitely a delay with pulling the paddles. And for anyone else who's pulled gears on the C7, is it just me or do the shifts get progressively slower as you go further through the trans? I'm guessing maybe that's a strategy for durability perhaps?

I do like the exclusiveness to a degree. Not sure that's a good reason to buy a car. The only thing stopping me really is the, no back seats. Also... I do not mean to seem like I am trolling. Where else do I have this discussion though?

I've got a 15 C7 Z51 8 spd 10k Miles never been in the shop. The silver paint is above average with orange peel. Could not find a R or track pack 16. The mustang feels like a large car compared the C7. Camaro z/28 vs 350 is common. C7 vs 350 not meant to be compared. If you look @ the lighting lap for 2016 the 17 C7 GS is 4 seconds faster then the 350 R. So take it from there ......not meant to be compared. Can't even compare them on price either . ADMs are insane with the ford crowd for the R. Not sure I'm crazy about the wing either. I've seen Z06 1ZL going for under $72K. The Z06 is what like 7 seconds faster then a R lap times.

I suppose it depends on what you are using it for.

Most definitely, I am not buying car based on its track capabilities.

In terms of fun on the streets, I agree no comparison. The different in speed and power is negligible. The sound and the visceral feeling in the 350 is beyond anything I have ever driven.

But very true. One is a dancer the other a street fighter.

OH, and from another personal perspective I paid no additional fee. So for me, it worked out great.

Please don't think I am saying anything negative about the C7. I am not. I loved it. And I will always miss it. Just not enough to go back in that direction.

I love them both. But for my purposed, the 350 is a no brainer. A few seconds on the track means nothing to me.

Unfortunately I sold my tech 350 and went back to a 13 boss. Both cars have the same fun on the street feel. But the boss can be beat on and no issues. The tech car not true. It's my fault I bought a tech but there were no track cars to be found. My C7 is the DD and the boss weekend toy. 350 is definitely a fun car on the street and the 17 is the way to go. It's priced right and the looks are super.

I drove several Z06s and considered buying them at some point.

They are incredible machines, I wouldnt think a base 350 or R can keep up with them.

Z06 manual lapped VIR lightning lap 2:44, 1 second shy of porsche 918. Thats just incredible performance.

When 2017s with cooling improvements come out, I think it can be a great alternative.

Also fit and finish wise its 99% of a high end porsche such as turbo. Way too many areas it will excel on top of the mustang, you cant really compare them.

But its just too much power...:)

stat sheet racing is only worth so much IMHO. 99% of us will never be able to approach the limits of the cars we drive either because of laws or because of limits on our own driving abilities. Buying a car solely because a professional driver took it around a track faster than model X is silly. For me overall driver experience, engagement, and connection are much more important and also much harder to determine than by just reading the stat sheet. That being said it is well documented in many reviews that the fastest/most powerful engine is not always best. Examples:

Corvette stingray released to much fanfare and very well reviewed, the z06 had a ton more power, way faster, should be a no brainer? Not so, many reviews were disappointed by how the car performed (even before the over heating issues)

New WRX has received far more praise than the new STI

Cayman GT4 much better reviewed than more expensive, faster big brother 911's

So for me i don't really care what car comes out next that is "faster" or has more hp than the GT350, i only really care what comes out that gives me a more engaging, connected, exciting and special driving experience.

On a final note, MCarsfan, you are definitely 100% correct on everything you say about corvette, based on all your great insight and the fact that you love to pay under MSRP i think its a no brainer that you go buy one. I heard they even have a better forum than this one, why don't you go join and share some of your wisdom with them.

Is it a requirement for dealership ownership to have a really goofy last name?
