Has anyone contested the extra $500 being charged for metallic paint?

I called ford service (Ford AU) and they claim this is the cost for "premium" paint and to discuss the cost with the dealer as Ford Service do not discuss pricing.

In US the only extra costs are associated to the TY , White Platinum and Ruby Red.

NZ and Canada also only charge extra on these three colours, while everywhere else an extra cost is added to most of the colours.

If the cost is being passed on from Ford US that is fair, but Ford AU adding this cost to increase profit simply because we are so used to paying for metallic paint jobs is unfair. So has anyone discussed this with their dealers?

why shouldn't ford charge more for metallic paint? they are selling a product and can sell it for whatever the market wants to pay for it.

Realistically ford AU have priced this car extremely well. Given the prices they are selling for online, ford could have charged 75k for the car and still sold out for years in advance.

I paid more for lightning blue and an extra for the OTT Stripes. In the grand scheme of things it's not much to be honest I wasn't fussed.

I paid an extra $500 to option up to 'Competition Orange'. Although not a metallic, it was classed as 'Premium paint colour' upgrade.

Considering I love the colour it was a small price lol.

Cheers,
Dave.

Seriously?

No offence intended, but I think you're not approaching the negotiation from the right direction.

I suggest that you agree the spec and then negotiate the price. A cost for premium paint is a given in the automotive retail world.

With any major purchase, I just look at the total asking price and decide whether it represents value or not. It didn't take me long to make that assessment in the case of the Mustang.

You manage to hang on to your order, quick duck? Hope so. I seem to remember you trying to offload it a few weeks ago.

I paid $500 for the silhouette option on my 2008 FG and $500 for the gunmetal on the 2014 Kia Platinum Sorento (just been traded for the mustang). $500 seems the norm for metallic across the range of manufacturers. I know Metallic is usually $80 to $100 a liter then you are looking at the clear coat as well. So all in all the asking price isn't to bad.

The OP is correct. It is unfair to be charging a extra cost to a certain person but not to another if they are receiving exactly the same product, it is discrimination. The "in the grand scheme of things", "it's normal To pay for metallic" comments are purely a cultural thing brought about from years of retail and marketing exposure to that being 'the norm'.

If it is not normal to pay for metallic paints in another country, why is it ok that we should pay? Australia tax? Price gouging?
Don't we already pay $15,000-20,000 more for this vehicle than in the US? (Haven't check the exact figure for a while).

Note that I went for metallic, I didn't think about contesting it, but given if the evidence is correct then it is a valid point and reason to question it.

No we don't. This is a good story for some to bring out for a "winge".

The approximate cost of a PP GT a Fastback in the US to Australian Specs is $US 41,000 ( that's PP NOT the a Premium GT ).

Add the Australian GST of 10% ( not in the US price ) and that makes it $US 45,000.

Convert that to $AU and you get 59,000. Add some extra shipping costs and the numbers are very close.

We get a bloody good deal on Mustang here in Australia.

Regarding the OP, and contesting the premium paint price ?

I say good luck with that.

The $500 was for "premium" paint; that can be metallic or non-metallic. From memory most of the colours were classed as premium.

I don't think it's unreasonable but a bit silly of Ford in a way - they could just have had a $500 higher price and most people wouldn't have cared less.

Compared to the paint of the previous S197 generation, the S550 paint is definitely premium.

PPPony thanks for clearing that up. I think it is a good deal too, compared to what you get for the price compared to other cars for similar price.

But I think the OP is asking why is it OK that we pay more for the same thing, doesn't matter if they call it "premium" or not.

The paint is definitely a bit of a rip off.

I think it's a market thing. As long as I can remember we've been charged a premium for non standard paint in Australia.

The product is definitely more expensive and more difficult to apply ( to some degree) but I don't think it's $500 worth.

It's all relative I guess, I think the car as a whole is a bargain here in Australia.
