Anyone know how to remove the chrome rings around the spedo/tach so I can put some foam in there? They are rattling on bumps and it's driving me crazy

I did it multiple times. The easy way is yanking on them and pulling while holding the inner black pastic but dont do it that way. My dealer tried to fix a rattling doing the short cut and it got worse by bending the clips that goes in to their housing. So i purchased a new speedometer trim because of the bastards.

Here is the best way to do it. Take the dash apart. Start from the right the alumium trim and then take out the left side trim. Now you have to take the bottom piece where it detects the key fob. After that take out the plastic trim where the sunglass holder is. Now you will see two bolts holding the speedometer trim bezel. You have to take those two bolts out. Dont forget the two screws under the left side vent. After all the bolts and secrews are out, then you have to pull the bezel out. Now you can safely remove the chrome bezels and put foam in between. Let me post a pic

As you can see, you have to take out the plastic portion on the steering wheel as well. All this work will take for a first timer, probably more than an hour.

Thanks for the pics. That's a good amount of work. I've taken the dash off to pad the central chrome air vents and the chrome around the performance pack gauges (which was a good amount of work) but this seems like more of a headache. What will just wedging the chrome trim off the black portions of the spedo/tach do again?

It may break or bend the locking clips. You push them in to install but to take them off you have to press the clip holder from the other side to give it enough slack. I know it is a pain in the butt but i would recommend taking the complete bezel out. The best thing is you can actually put the foam in from the other side and check it with your hands if the chrome is stable.

I cant believe Ford didnt make the bezel a one piece unit. These are all design flaws. Less pieces you have less rattles you will have. Especially plastic on plastic or metal on metal.

Thank you for your information. I was wondering is there a particular type of foam you used? Also, has the problem been completely fixed with this solution for you? Lastly, after removing the bezel from the dash, you are then able to yank out the chrome bezels and but foam in between the black plastic and the chrome bezel right?

I actually used a bathroom sponge to fill the gaps between the bezel and the rings. With my hand i took small chunks out of it. You can stick them in by compressing and pushing them on the cracks from the other side. The clips were also loose at their housings, so i used a felt type tape or paper to prevent them moving.

I'm pretty sure I have the same problem. But just to make sure: is the sound your hearing like a slight rattle? On my car it's a slight tap I can hear from the driver side when going over bumps or rough roads? If someone has a small clip of theirs, it would be greatly appreciated? Before I take mine apart.

Mine was coming when there was a temp diff during winter and summer using heater or ac with above 4000 rpms. The engine and exhaust noise was causing the rattle.

Here's what mine sounds like.
I think it's the gauge pod plastic chrome rings because they squeak when I touch them. Any feedback would be great!
