I think people need to research what drone is before they say their exhaust has no drone. If you put an aftermarket exhaust on your car it will drone.... How bad it will drone will depend on the exhaust you have chosen. I currently have a muffler delete that everyone claims it doesn't have any drone and I can tell you from personal experience that the muffler delete does drone but it's a small amount that's not annoying.

I would say that is not true. I have been building cars for over 40 years and have installed lots of exhausts that do not drone. Some of the worst have been chambered mufflers like Flowmasters.

Drone can be described quite easily. It is a very noticeable increase in the exhaust volume that happens over a narrow rpm range, quite often you can make it come and go with a slight change in throttle. It almost always happens in an rpm range where you drive the car the most which is why folks find it annoying. If it is not loud enough to hear over the ambient noise in the car it is not drone.

That being said I have a home made cat back on my EB. It consists of replacing the resonator with a straight pipe with a Y connecting to the pipes to the mufflers. The stock mufflers have been replaced with 14" oval Magna Flows. At idle the sound level is about the same volume as stock but with a deeper tone (the Magna Flows do a good job of absorbing the high frequency tones). Under acceleration the volume increases fairly dramatically but still keeps it lower tone bias and never gets annoyingly loud. At any steady state cruising speed up to 80 mph it is no louder than stock above 80 it continuely gets louder, this is not drone. This exhaust does not drone and IMHO is perfect for a daily driver, you know it's there but is totally unobtrusive when just cruising down the road.

A muffler delete should not introduce drone. More noise yes (even constant noise), but not drone.

Drone is typically caused by resonate frequencies around 100-150hz which can be very annoying in cabin. A resonator attempts to cancel out these frequencies to eliminate drone.

Mufflers do exactly what they are named, they muffle sound (but typically have no effect on drone).

Could you possibly post some pics and a list of part numbers you used to do this as I would be very interested in doing this myself. Do you hear the turbo more ? I would really like to be able to hear the turbo as you cant hear it at all with a stock exhaust.

No pics I did buy all the parts from Summit Racing. The muffler and Y are Magna Flow and the pipe was Summit brand. I also got a set of tips off Amazon.

The mistake I made was I thought the down pipe going into the resonator was 2.5" but it was 2.25. I couldn't clamp the straight pipe to the down pipe so I welded it and used a clamp on the straight into the Y.

Nice !! Thanks so much. Si if I but a Y pipe thats 2.25 in and out that should work better right ? Did you weld the whole system or use clamps on the rest ? I would have to find an exhaust shop to weld it all but it will still be waaaay less than buying a full system to only find out you dont like it :doh:

I welded the straight pipe to the down pipe because of the diameter mis-match but clamped it to the Y. Everything else was welded. I used some scrap 1/2" bar stock I had laying around to make hangers for the mufflers that hook the stick grommets.

I posted this in the main exhaust thread but thought I would help and share here as well. This is the Solo catback - deep tone, clean sound, no drone, and doesn't sound like a fart can compared to most options for our car. Use headphones!
