My understanding is S doesn't lock up as soon as D. S is more for road course.

Going to the track and datalogging, if tuned, and having the shift points adjusted while in D will provide the most consistent and best results.

If you are roll racing, you can put the car in S, use paddle shifters to select gear, go full throttle while at the same time moving the shifter to D.

I've never heard anything like this before. I'm afraid you'll have to name your sources.

Which part? the S doesn't lock up as soon?

I have had 2-3 tuners tell me that when I was trouble shooting problems with my 14 mustang.

It makes since,as my understanding S is more for road course. Easiest way to confirm is to go try it out.

my best times were all from a HARD brake launch at 2200-2400 and I would 1.76-1.78 60' every single time letting the car shift at 7350
How the heck are you launching at 22-2400RPMS? The car starts pushing or spinning the tires around 18-2000RPMS.

Per the Mustang owner manual:
"Drive (D)
Drive (D) is the normal driving position for the best fuel economy. The overdrive function allows automatic upshifts and downshifts through all gears.
Sport (S)
Putting your vehicle in sport (S):
  • Provides additional engine braking and extends lower gear operation to enhance performance for uphill climbs, hilly terrain or mountainous areas. This will increase engine RPM during engine braking.
  • Provides additional lower gear operation through the automatic transmission shift strategy.
  • Provides gear selection more quickly and at higher engine speeds."
No where does it say anything about lockup. In fact it clearly states that placing the shifter in S provides a quicker shift.
Now if you're tuned and running a different converter all bets go out the window but this thread was initially talking about launching a stock, untuned (or mildly tuned) auto.
Sorry but you make the claim you'll have to provide the evidence. No offense, just the way it works.

It would have to be stalled. But is says stock converter in his sig. I have a converter also. But I cant really give a stock stall guy advice on how to launch because My car wont push til 3200RPM. It's also not likely that a stock stall will match my 1.6 sixtys. Telling a stock converter guy to brake the car up to 2400rpms will lead to a lot of frustration.

Misread that. Must be a super loose converter if that's true then.

Sorry I'm new to the Automatic world, I've always had 5 speeds back in the day. But i love the auto's now, but i'm reading about launching. are you guys using the brake to hold you at 1000-2500? then geen let go and WOT in S mode for best times? I have the v6 btw. it's so damn fun, but it feels like it bogs just mashing it till it his 15mph then i can feel the pony's. I keep AV/TC off. any advice would be handy. I've also read about things like the JMS pedalmax to reduce throttle lag/response. is that really true? i've had a bunch of late 90's stangs with 260-300 hp and they would cook tires. This thing is almost impossible to cook the tires. but once it starts rolling it really takes off. Thank you guys for any help.

Haven't tried it so I'm just making sure I've read that right, selecting S instead of D allows you to pick AND maintain a desired gear or just maintains that gear a little longer before up shifting on its own?

Selecting S and using the paddles will give you total control over the shifts (with a few exception for tranny safety). Put it in S, hit the downshift paddle (will flash 1) and you are in full manual mode. If you just put it in S and not touch a paddle you will have quicker shifts but it will all be automatic.
Again, my launch routine is turn off AdvancTrac by holding the TC toggle for 5 seconds.
Shift into S. I don't touch the paddles, let the trans shift on it's own.
Do my burnout.
Roll up til the first light is lit. Stop.
Rev to 1200, ease forward til the second light just comes on.
Leave on the last yellow.
How hard I roll into the throttle depends on the traction I'm getting. I run summer street tires and will roll the throttle as hard as I can until the tires start slipping. I run all stock with 20" tires and added the BMR cradle lock to help with wheel hop.
