How easy (or not) to pinch?

I was just wondering how easy (or hopefully difficult) it would be for someone to nick a Mustang? You read all kinds of stories about thieves (somehow) cloning the key transmitters (or whatever they are), but I was just wondering.

Having waited such a long time to get mine - and being so utterly impressed with it, I'd be so pi$$ed off if some nonce tried to lift it.

I'm hoping someone's going to tell me it's actually quite hard to steal a keyless car!

I am told its easy.

So I took following precautions to slow them down at least:

- Key fobs are in guard pouches to reduce transmission wifi range which are then put into a metal tin box in the evening.
- Car has thatcham approved steering wheel lock.
- OBD2 is gorilla taped up.
- My car looks different to regular one so it stands out, so not easy to re-sell.
- Leave it in gear and hand brake on.


Thats it, hopefully enough to make them think twice and move onto next easier target.

As far as I know so far there have not been any reports of a UK model 2015 Mustang having been stolen or even attempted or broken in to.

On other makes and models one vulnerability is the OBD port which has been used to bypass and/or clone key fobs. There is no evidence that this is a vulnerability on the UK 2015 Mustang but the OBD port is easily accessible next to the drivers right knee (on UK RHD 2015 Mustang). There are some commercial products which put a physical lock over the OBD port which could deter anyone messing around and would also prevent other casual access such as when you leave the car for a valet.

By the way I have discovered that on the UK 2015 Mustang if you remove some of the dashboard trim between the steering wheel and the drivers door then deep inside you can see a second OBD port. Does anyone know what is the purpose of this second OBD port?

They pretty much always 'transmit' you do need the fob, or a masked fob in the car to trick the car into thinking it's there and thus let the engine go on. Mine sits in a metal tin... Hard enough for me to find in a morning when i forget, let alone a thief lmao.

Duplicating recievers isn't 'hard' it's a fairly easy thing to do. (Duping, Mirroring whatever). However it's mirrioring the signal inside the vehicle (Essentially you need something to bounce the singal to open the door, and when it bounces also duplicate it and retrasmit it.

The issue comes with actually turning the car on from that. For starters they're going to probably have to steal it from your drive, if it's in a car park you'll be way to far away for them to clone it, also too many keys around (say a shopping centre). So your main risk is overnight at home.

I've got the following precautions in place.

1) it's got a cover on, may not seem like much, but, it's a bit extra to take off
2) cctv 1080p motion sensative (constant recording) night vision enabled camera's all over my house, there's 8 in total.
3) i have a steering wheel lock in it... Guess where the key to unlock it is... you guessed it, it's with the car key...
4) key is in a tin overnight
6) Car is about 25metres from my doorway, and about 50-80metres from where the Tin is in the house, would take a fucking good reciever to get it.
7) Main entrances to house (assuming someone was to try and brake in) are motion sensative and will set off an internal alarm should somebody try to break in
8) Alarm is tied to police as well
9) It's a Mustang... They stick out like a sore thumb. As Gibbo said, his is one off, easy to track, and he's got holes in his boot should they try to steal his.

However, regardless of all this, nothing is theft proof, you can only minimise the risk.

Also, cars like this are 'buy to sell' you'd have to be a mammoth cock swab to nick a car and keep it (Joy rides discluded)

If a theif wants it they will take it. Hand them the keys and go through insurance.

Don't forget it is just a car. No point risking injury or more to your loved ones. It can be replaced. Just treat it like you would any car

I agree with the insurance point. That's what u pay em for, might be a pain, but rather a pain than a potential loss of life.

Good info guys, I like the fob cover and storing the keys in the metal tin. May have a look at some of the other things but I do keep my star in a locked garage overnight so that's a big benefit.
