If you have a Whipple with twin fans, i have a question

Hey guys, first I want to be clear about this post, im not complaining…
That said, I just had a 2.9L Whipple with all the upgrades installed. One was the twine 14" fans. My question is, for those of you who have the same setup up; are your fans so loud when I sit at a light I hear them over the radio.

Have the same fans but they are a little loud. I cant her mine at all over the exhaust. Yes of coarse at start up/cut off but Whipple makes a harness to bypass.

Are yours not the Whipple 11" fans?

My fans are the Whipple 11" and yes, I can hear them at a red light but not too bad. I have to specifically listen but I can hear them. For me I really only notice them when in a parking garage or at a drive thru window. I installed a toggle to turn them off wen at a drive thru or when I want because sometimes people taking my order say they can't hear me lol. I did there same to my F150 for the same reason.

So, to answer your question I can hear them but not once rolling and definitely not over radio even at a stop.

Yea i hear mine too. They are pretty loud. Im also debating putting a switch in to shut em off when needed.

the harness you were talking about, I have searched on whipple's site and I cant find them. can someone please post a link?

Not sure what harness your referring to. When I got my kit in 2/15 the fans were on from the second the car had power and ran for a bit after the car was shut off. After they came up with the fans controlled by PCM all kits were then supplied with the new version harness. I had to get a retro harness to update mine but your kit should be current.

I made the toggle switch setup myself.

After they came up with the fans controlled by PCM all kits were then supplied with the new version harness. I had to get a retro harness to update mine but your kit should be current.

That harness only works with the whipple tune. If you are tuned by anyone else its still the old harness which kicks on as soon as u push the clutch in to start an runs a few seconds after the car shuts off.

Whipple really needs to make the fan more intelligent instead of just turning it on when the engine is running.

How can it be more intelligent? If your goal is to make less power and higher temps, maybe just not run them. Since the goal is to keep the intercooler water as cold as possible, which has a direct relationship to power and detonation, I wouldn't know how to make them smarter. The number one area they are needed is low vehicle speed where the airflow is not enough to maintain temp.

This is not the engine which has a thermostatically controlled system, it is an open system striving to run as low temp as possible.

It would be cool if they didn't come on while trying to warm the car up lol However, that seems like a difficult thing for Whipple to set up. It would have to read temp instead of RPM. I have seen plenty of folks using a toggle switch to turn them on and off when wanted. I am so used to them now that I barely notice them. I won't be using the toggle switch idea, because I don't want to kick my fans on after the car is already getting to hot. Too much to pay attention to at all times. The first couple weeks they drove me crazy.. But that's just because I've never had such a setup before. But now it is just a part of the car and I really don't notice them at all anymore.

I am not dissing Whipple products, in fact I am looking to buy one myself in the future.
I think from a performance stand point, you want to run it 100% all the time. But, most people also DD their cars here so and not using the boost 100% of the time so the IAT won't get that high at all time.
I think what I meant is instead of manually turning them on and off, maybe there could be some kind of logic looking at variable parameter of the vehicle such as CHT, RPM, IAT1&2, and engine load.
I know right now the fan is tied to the water pump so if you shut down trigger in the ECU, it shuts both off. Maybe tie the water pump to fuel pump and have existing trigger just to control the fans?
The other thing to consider might be a dual speed fan? But that still require separating the water pump from the fan.

I have the fans and you are right... You can hear them pretty much all the time. Honestly for me I would rather have them on full blast all the time keeping my temperatures in the happy zone, regardless if I am under boost or not. Safety under boost!!!
