How to pull motor in garage

Hello,

I read the couple threads about motors blowing up. I of course hope this doesnt happen for a long time but also mentally preparing for it.

That said Im pretty good at wrenching but have never pulled a motor myself. Is this doable in your garage? if so do you pull the entire front bumper etc off then out the front or how do you physically get it out? Any write ups out there?

I imagine my plan will be to get it out tear it down looking for the failure then haul to a local speed shop for machining or whatever it needs then bring home put back together?

Bump, I'm also interested in this. The factory service manual describes pulling the engine out with the hood off, so I imagine you remove the front and pull it out.

Anything is possible when you put your mind to it. Apartment large? That would be self inflicted torture. 2 car garage still would be self inflicted torture but more doable. This is the biggest job that would ever be done on your vehicle. I would give it long thought before attempting. Nobody cares more about your vehicle than you do so I completely understand why you would want to do this in your garage. And the savings.

I have a 3 car garage. I'm researching right now moving into a new house with bigger garage and putting a lift in. I can't imagine its cheap to pay someone to pull the motor and machine it. Just curious what all goes into pulling it.

Never tried it in a S197 or S550 but with the New Edge I have done it with only taking the hood off.

I have mine taken down all the way and I'm pretty confident that with an engine stand and an extra jack to support the transmission I could definitely take the hood off and then yank the engine out. My driveway is just on a steep slope which is why I can't do it at home

On my 03 Mach 1, when I did a 03 cobra motor swap, we took it out the bottom. Just disconnected everything underhood then unbolted the tranny+k-member+struts. It was easier than it sounds and made access to the engine for headers, etc, super simple.

If I ever drop a motor out of my '15, I'll take it out the bottom.

I've done it this way with a lift, but never in a garage.

That's the key, if you took it out the bottom how would you lift the car high enough to slide it out

With a tractor and a set of pallet forks. Just run it right under and flip it on it's tail. LOL!

So you can take enough out of the front for it to come straight out? Probably just put a pallet or something under it on casters so you can roll it straight out I imagine?
