This might be one for Mustang Manders as he knows the ordering process off by heart!

OK, so, the strong rumours suggest the '18MY will bring S550's first facelift and upgraded engines/transmissions.

My query is, if you wanted to ensure you get one of the first '18MY S550s, when would be the best time to place your order?

A few assumptions:
1 - As the '17MY is due to start production on 2nd June 2016, we can assume the '18MY will start at a similar time in 2017 plus or minus a month or two
2 - The UK delivery time is still 12 months (hopefully less, as more RHD build slots are hopefully to be scheduled.

There's also the timeframe for orders being "locked in"......the point in which you cannot change your order....or, if you do, you end up at the back of the queue again.

My best guess would be to order July/August of this year?

You'll probably have to order 7 months before the MY18 order books open. Id have a punt and order October 2017. This will ensure a build of May 2018.
Which ensures delivery of july/Aug 2018

That's all assuming build times hit when they do and nothing improves. I'd expect it to improve as turn around is 9/10months now, not 12.

Have to bear in mind order books for 16s start Jun 2016. Which means anything built past June is a 2016.
So take 7 months from June and you're at October (must make sure it's late in october)
June 2017 will be MY17
June 2018 will be MY18

That's again, an assumption.

If you want your car to take longer just spec it up and they'll dilly-dally on it for a while.

I'd fully expect for to improve production speeds by 201u deliveries. They've already shaved a few months off and it's very easy to see where they could do the same again.

Ford are very secretive about any future products, so absolutely nothing is or will be confirmed......at least not until a few weeks, maybe months before production begins.

However, there are a few good people on this site with good information. You can expect a light refresh front n rear, probably with revised lights and bumpers, etc. The 5.0 at least is expected to get a bump in power (maybe 450-460hp in the US) and the option of the new 10-speed auto. The interior may get a slight tweak, but I suspect that would be limited to new/upgraded trim.

We should start to see camo'd prototypes by Summer.....this is an near to "confirmation" as we'll get, at least until order guides are released in the US.....and sometimes that sort of stuff gets leaked early, which is how we knew for sure the GT350 was coming :)

Do you mean (UK) order books for '17MY cars start June 2016? The cars currently being delivered are effectively '16MY cars already. It's the '17MY cars that start to be built at Flat Rock in June of this year (with the new colours)

So.....

June 2017 builds will be MY18
June 2018 builds will be MY19

Either way, I think you're right, that to be on the safe side, ordering in October should ensure the order is locked in in a time frame to ensure the next model year.

Told you it was doing my head in! :D

Well the issue is, that my car will be a MY16. However it will not have sync 3. Cars built in June will have sync 3. So it's a 2016 year but not a 2016 model mustang.

I have no idea when the UK order books open for the 2017 models. I'd assume they flip them year on year so:

My16 opened april/may build slots I believe start in June
I assume MY17,18...etc would be the same?

I'd sit safe side and order 7 months before order books open but you'll need to track the order process incase it speeds up and change accordingly

My guess is the official unveiling will be at next year's NAIAS in Detroit.

That's a good point. Ford may well want to make a big splash at the autoshow. For the US customers, that usually means nice big discounts off the '17MY so dealers can clear their lots before the new cars arrive :)

Easy prediction that one. Predicting when to order for a my18 first slot is like trying to predict when oil will bounce back or level off. Lol!

That's correct. However were talking how to order and be one of the first in line. So to order and ha e your car forced into a my18 slot.

Tt- I don't think there's any pre jan16 builds being put into my17 cars. May will be a mass production to clear the books was the assumptions I got when I spoke to Andy. It might be a case of finding a reliant dealer and asking them to put you down on a my18 car the second the books open or they catch wind for it then going back in to spec it, might save you running the risk of not getting an 18?

I had been told that it will get a MINOR facelift, a few ponies (10ish), more leather (door trims) & that's about it, not a lot will change

For a MY18 Facelift you would need to order around June this year,
