yea if you dont zero back the torq wrench it will lose calibration or even if its an old one over time it will lose its calibration, i know with snap on you can always send it back to recalibrate
if its a cam over type wrench then this is true. if the wrench is a split beam it doesn't need zeroed out for storage

Not sure which type it is. Its a Pittsburgh $20 torque wrench from Harbor Freight. I think its just a bad one or I messed it up something by twisting the handle too far down or something.

That's a cam over so you should unwind the handle for storage. Being from harbor freight it wouldnt be surprising if it was defective

Oh ok good to know. Funny enough I was just thinking about heading over to sears and picking up their digital one and see whats up once and for all.

26 ft-lbs = A 26lb weight hanging off a 1 foot wrench. No way this shears a bolt...

You can probably rent a torque wrench from Advance/Oriely/AutoZone. Advance rents tools for free. (Deposit returned when tool is returned)

So yep my other torque wrench was jacked. Bought one from Sears that is normally 80 for $40. Not bad and I was able to properly torque down the bolts to 26ft lb.

Glad you found out on something that wasn't important. Better than snapping off a spark plug.

....and always remember to unload the torque wrench back to zero after each use.:D
Ok, I'm in the Metrology business and torque wrenches are the instruments with the highest failure rate of any test equipment. This is mainly due not storing the wrench in it's lowest setting (micrometer adjust type). By not doing so, you are keeping a load on the spring, deforming, it. BTW, most do not have a zero setting, just run down to the lowest marked setting.
