Plastidip on Rear Base Bumper

Hey all,

I know there are a few threads about this but the information is scattered and you have to go through the posts to find what you need (if at all).

I want this thread to be just about plastidipping the rear base bumper to get the premium look.

For those of you who have done it. Can you post your tips and best practices for doing so? How many coats did you use? How much time did you let one coat dry before applying the next coat? How did you do the edges.

This information would be very helpful to those of us who haven't yet tackled this and are looking to do so!

I did 1 light coat on anything not touching tape then immediately came back with a heavy coat at the tape line. Within minutes i was pulling the tape off. I used green 3m automotive painters tape and a keen eye to get my straight line. Took almost no time at all.

Nice. Looks really clean.
So just 1 coat? Wouldn't that present a problem when you want to peel it off? Or if you have to peel it off?

Did you pull the tape immediately after you sprayed the heavy coat on the tape? Also, did you cover up the red reflectors as well?

Yes. By 1 coat, i mean i never let it dry. I did the whole thing in one go. If it starts to dry, it WILL string and look awful. I taped the lines and the exhaust. I just peeled the plastidip off the reflectors once it was dry.

I dont know how it will affect the removal, but i never plan on removing it. Plus the easiest way of removing thin dip is with wd-40 or aerokroil (or any other liquid wrench stuff).

Ive never plastdipped anything ever so I want to do it right.
It can be applied directly to the bumper right without sanding it or anything like that?

Also, are the can multiangle? Whats the best way to apply the spray? Distance from the bumper? Angle? etc

Directly on the paint. No prep work, just make sure its cleaned with soap and water then dried.

The cans are multi angle, but the more empty they gret, the more care you must take with keeping them upright. the cans about a foot away if i remember correctly. Thats a good starting distance. I rattle can things all the time and have a very quick hand so i go as close as 6" sometimes, but its easy to get runs that close.

Good news is if you mess up, just peel it off and try again.

clean the area with soap/water and let dry.

use tape to mask off the area not intended to be painted.

I have a premium car, but I also did this to the bumper on my car two weekends ago. plastidip is a wonderous thing.

Just prep with soap/water then let dry. Tape off with good automotive painters tape. Make sure you remove the tape while the dip is still wet.

I might be the only person that ended up with crooked lines after peeling the tape off but I was able to fix it with vinyl. I did 3 coats of dip and 1 coat of glosifier(sp)... my tape lines looked straight but after peeling off the tape i was wrong, so what I did to fix it was go to an arts & craft store, got a really long sheet of matte black vinyl and cut it to my needs, So i put the vinyl over the crooked lines to make it look straight, it blended in perfect, you cant see the vinyl at all. In the pics the car is dirty because of the rain these last few days but even when clean looks perfect.

You can see the little strip of vinyl, thats how wide I cut the peace I used but a lot longer, long enough to go over the entire top area of where I dipped

275s on 20x8.5s in front and 305s on 20x10s out back. And yes gloss black fr500s

I attempted this but failed. I peeled the tape up right after I laid my last coat but it dried so fast and started peeling. I may just use paint instead of dip. Someone on another forum used bumper paint from auto zone. I'm pretty sure if you use paint you can wait for the paint to dry and not have to worry about messing up the finish.

That is true. with paint you can wait til its dry.

Also when doing dip, its a good idea to do it in a cool, shady spot. I did mine at sunset in the garage with the door open.
