Just been chatting about this on the delivery inspection sticky, but don't want to clutter the sticky too much, hence the new thread. It's a bit of a grey area, this one.

Here's the story so far....

I called a Ford dealer (franchise) two weeks ago to order a new Mustang GT Fastback Manual in Deep Impact Blue. They told me that colour was now discontinued, but they had several cars already on order for their own stock... one of which was DIB. These cars were ordered in 2015 and due July 2016.

They said that these cars were late enough in the build process that the colour was guaranteed, but early enough that the spec could still be reconfigured. Perfect - I get the spec I want (including discontinued colour) and get the car earlier than if I had ordered from scratch.

I spec'd the car up and placed a deposit - happy days :)

This is where you break out the tiny violins and tell me to stop complaining, but I just realised this morning that I was being charged the post-Jan 2016 price for this car, despite the order having been placed (by the dealer) in 2015. Dealers aren't allowed to charge over list price, but I suppose the question is which list price applies.

Yes, I modified their existing order after the January price rise and yes, I would have happily paid the £500 anyway for early delivery and my colour, but I'd just feel like a bit of a mug if the dealer was pulling a fast one. It's the principle:rant:

Apologies to those who have bigger problems and would give their right arm for an early delivery, but I hope you can see where I'm coming from. Reading this back, I'm starting to think that maybe I'm chancing my arm, but that £500 would buy me a good chunk of a Borla Sport :)

I just replied to your original post:

Interesting, I am sure that dealers were not supposed to be able to place "stock" orders, but only order 2 cars - one as a showroom demo and one for test drives... I am amazed if they got away with this; I think it is more likely a cancelled customer order.

But if you ordered in Feb 2016, you pay the Feb 2016 price... and it is up to Ford and the dealer how the "internal price" is handled.

If you are taking over an existing order, they should have been able to give the "order number" immediately (something like "M123"), and if you mail [email protected] the team there will be able to give you an estimated build date. Just send them your name, the dealer name and the order number with the date of the original order and when you took it over...

It is a Ford Store you are buying from - they are the only ones who can officially sell a mustang....

That is a bit cheeky of them, just raise it with them if you havent already...they may just be trying to claw a little more profit knowing that it's a more difficult spec to get hold of now. But no reason to overcharge you! Like you say, that's vital modding cash!

Oh, and congrats on the order! Let us know how you get on...

You bought the car this year and you will pay the going rate for this years car, it's irrelevant what they paid for the car, as they charged you this year price, if you ordered the car last year you would of got last years price, you can't expect to pay last years price this year, look on the bright side you could of ordered today and paid an extra £500 on top of what you paid as they have gone up again, you have also got a colour which is impossible to order now anyway, can't see what the problem is as you have also shortened you waiting time

You're right to ask the question but you pay the current price at the time of order, or so my dealer told me when I was confirming my Feb2015 price.
Congrats on your order though and only having to endure a four month wait

Yes, I thought it was a bit odd too. Don't want to get anyone in trouble (or jeopardise my order!), so I'll take it up with them directly.

Just wanted to sus out where I stood first - this is helpful, thanks.

Yes, I modified their existing order...
There's your problem. A modification to an existing order is classed as a new order and subject to the current pricing.

I know this because my dealer was trying to charge me £500 to DROP the climate seat option (£500 saved by losing the seats but have to pay new total price of £1K more)!

I know of quite a few dealers who have done this trick and bought stock cars

Well, my point was that it's last year's car, but you're right - it's still the one that I want and I'll get it early, so it's probably bad karma to complain about it!

However, if it so happened that the dealer was in the wrong, I'd be a fool not to take the £500. I'll ask the question anyway and let you know how I got on. Thanks to all for the input.

Ah, that could be the key point. It's not looking good, but I'll try my luck anyway. Certainly won't be deal breaker.

Cancelled orders that have been locked in the system become 'stock cars' to dealers, therefore allowing them to move prices, the person who ordered it had they gone through the chain, would have paid £500 less, however, as you're classed as a new customer taking up this order you'll pay current price.

Not much to complain about, i know a few people that would pay top dollar for a discontinued colour (CO/DIB/Guard) or to get their car in 4 months!!!

Nope- it isn't "last year's car" - all the RHD mustangs are (so far) MY 2016, and when the factory switches in July, they will then become MY2017. But at this stage, the only known differences are in the colours.

At some stage there will be more significant changes (like Sync 3) but no one - not even Ford UK - have a clue when that might happen.

Any new order placed now (or in the last couple of months) will likely be built after the plant changes to MY2017; for RHD cars the change seems to be "clean out the paint lines and load up the new colours..."

But a MY2017 looks like it will be otherwise identical to MY2106...

Ford keeping the euro-spec Mustang virtually the same for 89 years, I wouldn't put it past them :D

I see you're from Belfast, I assume you ordered through TrustFord Lisburn. I should be getting my Mustang in June so might need a mini meet going with the rest of the Northern Irish guys.

If you ordered a car in Feb '16 you pay Feb '16 prices. Irrespective of whether the dealer shouldn't have ordered stock cars (bear in mind they maybe simply order cancellations that are already in the system), if you don't buy it - I'm sure they will have a queue of customers who will, especially now that DIB is discontinued!

Got it through Desmond's actually. Will be a bit of a pain come delivery time (I live 5 mins from Lisburn) but Lisburn couldn't get me the colour I was after. Will enjoy the long drive home anyway!

Yes, will definitely have to get a meet organised. Will be interesting to see what kind of numbers are ordered in NI. My mate spotted a black convertible in Finaghy already.
