2016 Black Mustang Ecoboost
Hey all, I just purchased a very nice base model Mustang Ecoboost (2016) in black (6MT). Best car I've ever owned, coming from a Toyota Solara, Toyota Corolla, etc.

I have just under 200 miles on it, I've been breaking it in pretty gently; kept it under 4k RPM for the first hundred miles, and now I'm keeping it for the most part under 5k, regularly shifting, etc. Once in a while I'll hit 6k when I really want to feel the boost. I think the dealership filled it with 87 gas so I still might not be getting its full potential, but it is still incredibly fun to drive and I get pretty good mileage.

Anyway, some issues I've noticed while driving it around that perhaps some of you guys could help me with:

When I am reversing and have to stop, for example when a car is passing by, and I press in the clutch, I hear a thud. Only happens in reverse and in the described scenario. Don't know what to make of it.

Also, say I am in 3rd or 4th gear. I'll accelerate, then when I take my foot off the throttle, I'll hear a winding down noise, like something metallic is spinning. Very faint, and not too bothersome. I assumed it was the turbo winding down, but as this is my first turbocharged car, I would like to verify that.

The most annoying issue is when I flash my highbeams or turn them on, the right one turns on first, followed rapidly by the left. When the left one does turn on, I hear a very faint, very dull "clunk". In all of my experience, when I use highbeams, they were always synchronized with each other and soundless.

One thing I just noticed today. I was trying to vary my RPMs, so I was in 3rd at about 25-30 mph. Upshifted, dropped to 1.8k ish RPM, then put a little bit of force on the throttle. Car accelerated fine, but the acceleration was accompanied by a deep sort of rumble. Not sure if that's anything to be concerned about.

These are the main things that have been on my mind. I haven't even hit the boost that much except when I decide to gun it for a little bit, which doesn't happen very often; normally I build speed nice and steady.

One more question: When I downshift, I always rev match by double clutching. But in this car when I upshift, I need to kind of wait for the revs to drop as I hold the shifter where I want it to go until it drops in place. Don't want to put too much force on it just yet because I am assuming as it breaks in everything will loosen up nicely. Boring way to drive though, if I am being completely honest. I'm used to shifting when I want, and have never messed up a transmission or anything. I feel as long as I keep everything smooth, nothing will break.

This has gotten way longer than I anticipated. Sorry about the long read, but if I could get some input, I would really appreciate it

Sounds like the shutters on the headlights are sticking, take it back to the dealer explain and show this to him

Thank you for your response.. I will do as you said. Hopefully they can just lubricate it or something and I won't have to get the whole headlamp changed. What do you think?

Any input on the other things?

Edit: Quick update. Made an appointment at my local Ford dealer, unfortunately they're booked till early next month, and I'll have to drop the car off for a day at least..

You're taking the load off the drivetrain by depressing the clutch. The thud your hearing is the driveline components unloading the torque, which then gets transferred through the mounts. (Aftermarket) stiffer poly mounts can reduce the "thud", but at the expense of NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness) under other driving conditions.

A turbo that is spooling down will not generate a noise. The noise you are hearing is the load being transferred from the drive side of the rear axle ring and pinion to the coast side of the ring and pinion. The noise will resonate through the driveshaft and into the transmission, which will make it slightly audible. Nothing to worry about, it's normal for a RWD vehicle.

A "clunk" noise when switching between high and low beams is normal. That's the operation of the shutters; they are designed to operate as fast as possible. However, they should be operating at exactly the same time. If one has a delay, that can be caused by a faulty headlamp assembly, a circuit issue, or a module issue. Have the dealer check it out to get it taken care of.

When you load up an engine at low RPM, the engine sound will change due to the increased load. Completely normal, nothing to worry about.

I agree with you bringing it in and getting it checked out, talhizzle. Let’s get this escalated to the customer service manager for your area. Please PM me with your VIN, dealer, mileage, full name, and best daytime number.

Thank you very much for your reply, it set my mind at ease. Since this is my first brand new car, I am pretty nitpicky about it, but your words really helped me understand what is going on.

could be that 1.8k is a little low. Engine may be happier above 2000, even 2500.

I feel I have to shift my car slow too. My last MT car (or truck rather) was a long time ago, and I cannot remember how that shifted. I don't think I had to shift slow. But then it only had 200 hp motor, so who knows.

I was going to chime in and say the same. Best not to lug these motors down, I never put any throttle below 2300 or so.
