That is not entirely accurate. You are accelerating the wear on your 4th gear synchros to shift from 1st to 4th unless you take a conscious effort to shift slowly and manually assist in rev-matching. You could argue that you are preserving 2nd and 3rd gear synchros though.There is zero hard in jumping gears, my C5 Corvettes had a 1-4th lockout when you drove easily. So you had to go from 1st to 4th.
