I've read a few people say the 275's provide better steering feedback on a 19" wheel over the 285's. My guess would be that because 275's ideal rim width is 9.5" where the 285's ideal rim width is 10", the sidewall is at a more optimal angle, but that's just speculation.

What are you running and have you noticed a difference if you've ever switched? I'm going to be buying a set of RE-71R's to pair with my Tech 7's for Auto X and those seem to be two most common sizes.

I don't think 0.2 in roll out size and 0.1 in difference in width will matter unless someone can say otherwise from experience. It mostly comes down to how they feel handling wise.

Also have seen a few run 265/40R19's as well...

Depends on the tire. Your statement about the ideal widths is correct for most tires. For Autocross I'd go with the 285/35 as you'll usually want as much tire as you can fit (well) on there. The slightly taller tire (26.9" vs 26.6") will help if you are on a course big enough to run out 2nd gear frequently.

I'd agree and say that the 275/35 on a 9.5" would probably have slightly better response than a 285/35 on the same wheel.

My personal back to back experience is with a 255-40/17 and 275-35/17 Maxxis RC-1 on a 9 inch wheel. Both brand new on the same day. I was 1 second slower on the 275's( 1.05 to a 1.06). That was on a 3500lbs 96 Cobra. I currently run a Federal RS-RR 275-35/19 on a 19x10 on my 17 GT. The Federal 275 runs about a 285 width in other tires. The tire has a tiny bit of stretch, tiny. So take that as you may. I would run the 275 on the 9.5.

The 275/35/19 Nexen Fera SUR4 is on closeout at Tirerack for only $125. Not as fast as the RE-71R but should last longer. I bought a set to try once I wear out my current tires.

I like 285 on 10.5" rims and 275 on 10" rims. I will likely run a 275 on my 10.5" rims in the future if I can find a cheap set of times to see what that looks and feels like, as there are more options, and I can't afford to buy yet another set of wheels.

Haha... too bad they only have 1 left.
Lol, ya I was going to order a set at that price. IDK how far 1 tire is going to get me.

Anyway, go 285\35.

FYI the top speed difference in an 15 - 17 Mustang GT with 3.73 rear gear between a 275/35x19 and a 285/35x19 Bridgestone RE-71R is less than 1 mph.

I didn't say it was a big difference!

It all depends on how wide of a wheel you're going to mount them on. The steering feedback response opinions likely came from FS autocrossers constrained to stock wheel widths. Lots of people use 285s, some use 275 and in the great scheme of things - unless you're at the pointy end of competition, I wouldn't fool myself that this is going to make significant difference.

I really wish the Nexen N'fura and other 200TW options were available in 285. I have this personal problem where every time I get wheels/tires, I end up with some apparently offshoot tire size that nobody except select few support. Ug! Not to mention, 285 is becoming a class-max tire in time trials.
