The People's Republic of California, always handles this situation best.

Neil deGrasse Tyson tells us we won't need to drive our gasoline powered classics/performance cars, on the crowed highways soon. Cuz we will have racetracks all over the nation for that sort of enjoyment.

Clearly someone forgot to explain to him that reality, unlike astrophysics, only lives outside of most west coast states that touch an ocean. He's never owned a sports car by his own admission either
Yet, understands the future of the performance car culture, & all it's available facilities we will soon enjoy 😉.
That dude is a bunch of word salad. Not nearly as smart as he thinks he is. Absolutely a genius, but even geniuses can grossly over-estimate their talents/abilities.

Was a deal made years ago with the hwy 68 coalition that for running most events way below, at 90/92 db, the legal vehicle noise limit of 95 db on the California streets, the track could have some days exceeding the legal max
Lived across the street from laguna for 17 years. Still my home track

There are always lawsuits between homeowners and O’Hare Airport here. They piss and moan because they bought a house adjacent to one of the busiest airport in the world and didn’t think it would be noisy?
When I lived in Elk Grove Village right by O'Hare in an apartment I had planes flying right over my balcony. I couldn't here a thing due to the sound proof windows. Problem solved. Whoever built the apartments was at least smart about that.

Look ahead— these noise zealots get the track closed then the land sells to a high density home developer to build their crappy homes, which explodes the population in the area and traffic, crime, and yes NOISE, become a constant As their taxes go up to pay for the newcomers. And then they bitch about that. Complainer Culture in full view here. Way to go idiots.

That is not a scenario that can happen at Laguna. The land is owned by the county and it was deeded to them by the army years ago with a lot of restrictions on how it can be used
Plus the track is a cash cow for the county

Good to hear it won’t get bulldozed. Thanks for clarifying.

Riverside International Raceway was not because of a law suit. Someone bought the place thinking it would be a bigger money maker as houses and a mall or two. They closed it down, started building, then the city/county told them no houses unless you build the infrastructure, including a new sewage treatment plant. It slowed their construction down by years, and who knows if they made their money back as the recession and a gang/crime problem made real estate tank in the area. Seems the crips and bloods started moving out there and started making meth, etc.

I have raced my 1987 Swift DB-2 at Laguna Seca only once. I would do so every year if not for it being 5000 miles round trip.

Amazing facility and wonderful track. Dropping down into the corkscrew is like nothing else I've ever experienced.

The locals either loved us or hated us, there was no middle ground. Regardless, this track isn't going to disappear. Ever.

Someone tried suing an Air Force base over noise, and there were several court hearings, and then it was dismissed.

It wasn't that Eglin Air Force base was new, but the Air Force announced that they'd be testing the F-35 there and someone had heard the F-35 was loud. Someone in the city of Valparaiso (bordered on two sides by Eglin AFB) tried to sue to prevent the Air Force bringing the F-35 there. The base was loud enough with their F-15s and the occasional F-16, and someone decided No, we don't want a plane any louder than that.
The week the law suit was announced, a bunch of businesses put up signs saying "We love jet noise!"

The funny part had to do with a B-1 bomber. There was a change of command ceremony and the incoming unit commander was a B-1 pilot. Someone thought it would be cool to have a B-1 as the backdrop for the ceremony, and it's fortuitous that Eglin AFB has a concrete runway: It's one of the few Air Force bases where a B-1 can even land.

I think the plane landed on a Wednesday and they had the ceremony the next day. Then the plane stayed over the weekend. 🤔
I don't think it was a coincidence that when it left on Monday, it took off during a hearing about the F-35 suit. ...The F-35A with its one engine.
This bomber with 4 engines took off in full afterburner, which is a seismic event.

"You thought the F-35 was loud? Get a load of this..." 😜🔊

...So all you have to do to defeat a noise law suit is be a military base and show that your job was always loud. 😄

He's a smart guy, And he can apply his knowledge to other real world situations.
But.

I first noticed this when he was a bit upset that a rain delay in a NASCAR race was going to interrupt some other thing that he was more into. He calculated their on TV the maximum speed he thought he car could actually go around the track given you know certain restrictions to make the calculation easier.
The cars in the actual race after the rain delay, went faster.

Every time he talks about a subject I have deep knowledge on, I see the flaws in his thinking and what he's wrong about.
When he talks about a subject I know little about, his opinions and thoughts on the subject sound reasonable.

He suffers from the same problem a lot of people do. He has a PhD in astrophysics. He has a solid science background in general science. But The thing about having a doctorate is you go off to the edge of human knowledge on a particular subject and you make that little bump of a little more knowledge to get that doctorate.
You are now are specialist.

But when you get further and further away from that specialty, you've studied less and less about it. You're less broadscope and more focused on one particular thing.

So whether it's cars and racing, motorcycles, computers and electronics or electrical design... Every time he's brought up those subjects I can see the flaws in his thoughts on it.

I imagine it's the same with everyone else listening to him speak about things they know about.

Interestingly though I do think that if I explained to him where his thoughts went in error, he would be willing to learn from it. Although in some cases he might not be interested.

This happened in the past and the previous ruling was for the track. I don’t see this one winning either

Nuisance lawsuits are filed all over the country, REGULARLY, against Shooting Ranges that pre-existed the new housing developments nearby, that developers got land for cheap.......... due to the proximity race tracks and shooting ranges.

Noise Ordinances can limit noise making to 10pm, and do.

I suspect that Laguna Seca, will survive the dentists assault..
