I've got a bottle of 21 year old Canadian Rockies "Canadian Whisky" and it's the smoothest whisky I've ever tried. When it's gone, I'll try something else - there's lots to choose from.

Where I live, the local liquor store system used to be a government monopoly. Last year it lost the monopoly and opened up to private competition. Well, they're certainly competitive - and the product range to choose from has exploded. I checked their website this morning for 26 ounce bottles of "whisky" between $40 and $100 and found 140 made in seven countries to choose from.

They're also doing "special releases". This month they released a batch of "specialty spirits". The lead item? A $32,000 bottle of Bowmore Black 1964. It sold in the first half-hour. For bourbon fans, the retail stores used their combined buying power to get a number of single barrels bottled exclusively for them. One barrel of JD, two of Knob Creek, one Buffalo Trace and one Wild Turkey. In the specialty bottled range they had Eagle Rare, Michter's and William Larue Weller at prices from $95 to $250.
Back in 2006 when Seagrams Distilleries came out with the original Limited Edition Crown Royal XR (Extra Rare) I was living on Vancouver Island at the time and went into the local government liquor store and bought a case of XR.

Those batches of whisky came out of their Waterloo distillery and has since burned down and closed.

To this day the case has never been touched or opened and it still resides with a friend of mine in Comox. (I checked out the duty to bring into America and it was crazy back in 2007)

Having said that I have purchased many single bottles of XR since that time and it is very smooth to say the least.

I'll keep and eye out for some "Canadian Rockies" whisky and looking forward to giving it a try.

I found this at a brewery in Bakersfield, CA. It was just an empty bottle on display, didn't have a chance to try it. Wonder if its good.

Crown XR was super expensive in Miami, was in a small town in Ga, they had 3 bottles on the shelf boxes were dusty, price was 79, I grabbed all 3, lady at the counter said you know thatā€™s 79 a bottle? I said yes, do u have anymore? She came back out with 3 more and I said I will take them all! She said did you do the math on that? I said a little short of 500, she just shook her head and called her husband to tell him some city slicker bought that expensive Crown I told u not to buy cause we ainā€™t gonna be able to sell it. Bird camp never had any better sittin by the fire stories and libations!

US inbound excise tax is $2.16 for a 26 ounce bottle of 80 proof now, and that's only if you bring back more than 1 liter.

Sounds like it's time for trip to Vancouver Island...
