Interesting poll for sure. Personally, don't think the money you make annually really makes all that much difference. IMHO, it how you manage your money & debt to income ratio is important. Some folks might make $200k/year & have $165k in bills or they might make $60k/year and still live at home with Mom and Dad and have no bills...who's better off?

Rent; I can't afford to buy a place to live in Brooklyn. And yeah, rent is ridiculous in New York, as always.

I'm at a firm down here on Wall Street. Compared to the other 300,000 people working within a quarter-mile radius of me, I'm poor.
lol I'm at a Wall st firm in Wilmington and a lot of ppl transfer down here from NY and ball out with the cheap rent/houses

I agree it depends a lot on location and other factors. Here in South Florida my townhouse rental is $1800 a month, no utilities included. With water, electric, internet and cable (Comcast) the real cost to live here is about $2,050 a month. A lot bigger portion of income goes to housing depending on region.

Also a person with little debt and makes $65,000 can pay more for a car than someone who makes $65,000 and has child support, credit card balances, loan repayments etc.

Also have to factor in savings. I had my car money cash put aside already beyond any investment contributions, IRA contribution, account slush money, etc. and still plenty left in the kitty. I spend very little money beyond bills and food; and maybe $100/month in gas.

Yeah, where you live matters a lot. I was thinking of moving closer to my office... but here's the type of one-bedroom apartment you can get here for $3,400 a month.

Debt management FTW!! I'm at $70k and my wife is at $100k. We are both 33 and will be married for 6 years this month on the 18th. No kids yet. During the first two years of our marriage, we hardly ever had any money, despite making a decent amount. Too much spending. It wasn't until we planned out a monthly budget with set amounts for mortgage, bills, retirement, fun, education, etc., that we started to feel financially safe. It was hard at first to adhere to the budget, but now it is just second nature.

One of us gets a new vehicle every four years (she's up this month and will be getting and new Crew Cab F150 for our anniversary) and we pay for it usually out-right (trade-in + remaining balance cash). I cannot stress enough how important keeping debt down to a minimum is to living a financially responsible life.

Chemical Industry shift supervisor. Live in small town. Got an LE at sticker. Divorced with primary custody of my 3.5 year old. This is my daily and most practical car. Me and the girl go everywhere in it. 41 and base pay is 100k. I do make overtime, and can get all I want. I don't get much as I'd rather be at home with my girl.

Kind of surprised at all of these married people here... I've always thought of the Mustang (or any 2 door, really) as a single person's car. Plus I guess I don't know that many married people to begin with.
Married with 4 kids in the house. We use the Expedition for the family vehicle. This is our 5th Mustang. For the first several years of marriage, our sole vehicle was a Mustang. We somehow made it work. It wasn't always easy, don't get me wrong, but the large SUV makes it much easier now.

80k base. 110k with OT. This year I'll finish higher, 125-130k. I only see 52% of each check though. 401k benefits, and high taxes because I'm single all pummel my net income for things like the car.

I know how you feel. I pay into railroad retirement which is more than social security, higher taxes cause I'm single, and max out my 401k every year.
