I've searched and read through the threads about this a few times. Some people report their Cylinder Head Temps and others report their coolant temps kind of skewing the data I am looking for.

Just curious how many of you switched from the evenflo 160 to the reische 170 stat due to Coolant temps / Cylinder head Temps not being nearly as low as they should be / advertised with a 160 stat. Temps are actually pretty damn close to the stock 180 Tstat.

The fans are adjusted in my tune and come on at lower speed around 165-170 (not 100% sure but they are on) and full blast at 176.

I've burped the system 5+ times so I'm sure all the air is out and it doesn't produce any of the signs of a coolant air pocket.

I'm currently running the evenflo 160 and with ambient Temps of 50F-55F when cruising I'm seeing COOLANT temps of 194-205ish and when idling coolant temps of 200-210ish. From what I recall i was seeing the same temps from the 180F stock stat. Cylinder head Temps are always 9-11F above whatever the coolant temp is. IAT was around 62-65F.

If you have either of these thermostats can you post your cruising/idling coolant temp or cylinder temp or both but please state which one your reporting if it's only one of them.

I even pot tested the evenflo stat and cycled it a few times so I know it's working but apparently it works differently in the engine than it does with the boiling water test as far as I can tell.

Also if you have any personal opinions on either stat or have switched from th evenflo 160 to the reische 170 please post that as well.

Thanks!

I have the 170 and no matter the weather conditions I am 180 coolant temp 190 head temp. Idling for a while, or driving 80 down the highway each will go up about 3-4 degrees above those. Stock I was 200 coolant, 210 in the head.

IMO 160 is too low.

On a Lund tune here. I swapped from the evenflo 160 to the resich 170 and actually saw a 10 degree drop across the board.

With my Reische 170, I'm seeing 170-180 coolant temps and 178-194 cylinder head temps. I never see the temps escape these ranges.

both are great thermostats, we offer both, for whatever reason ,the reische seems to run a little cooler in most applications, we sell probably 10:1 on those.

even though its rated at a higher temp. we did notice slightly cooler temps in our shop car as well

I went to the 170 stat and noticed 10 degrees less on the cylinder head.

I didn't believe the hype train either but eventually went with the 170. My CH temps now stay below 195, even in Florida summers.

Lund (who I'm tuned by) has to do a revision for the lower degree thermostat right?

Their initial tune has the fans lowered anyway(unless you had them raise them back to stock).

What does the 170* due/alter over stock to reduce the head temps? I guess I am asking how they work.

Does the car need to be tuned to run a cooler thermostat? Kicking around changing mine to a lower than stock setting for summer track days.

It cracks open at a lower temperature allowing the anti-freeze to leave the engine block and circulate through the heat-exchanger (radiator) thereby providing cooler fluid to the cylinder head. A cooler running engine will have better resistance to pre-detonation and allow the ECU to run more timing.

Of course all of this has a lot of math and science involved...you can't just run ice cold fluid through a motor and expect mega-horsepower. But 10-15 degrees cooler has shown decent improvement in performance.

Tested: stock, Evenflo 160, Reische 170
with Whipple stage 2 and PP(gt350) rad.
Evenflo is just too restrictive.
Car is road course tracked with REISCHE 170, and hood rear coping and seal is removed and runs 185-195 CHT putting 650rwhp down.
Sitting in traffic in 110 ambient and horsing around can still get you to 220+.

Removing coping made massive improvement 60%.
Other 40% is REISCHE 170 with its high flow.
