Get what you like, its your $40,000.
Exactly, that's why we have options. Whatever floats your boat, it's your $ and one should spend it how they see fit. There was a thread on one of the Bimmer forums just like this when I drove a BMW..auto is better/quicker, sticks are slower/out-dated. Just get what you prefer and call it a day.

I like the comfort of the auto in traffic plus it shifts faster than a manual, better ET. :D

Why? Because I like it that way. While I can drive manual cars, I just don't care for them.

Simple. I'm older now. I do the math. How much do I drive in a manner where the manual will benefit me and how much would the auto be better. Turns out about 90% auto is better for me, 10% of my driving I will prefer a stick. I'm one of those who really enjoy shifting and at one time would not look twice at any car with an auto, but things change, and so do I. Also, now a days I would never be willing to shift a car as hard and fast as would be required to be faster or even as fast as an automatic, so the auto will be faster for me. Also, autos are much better than they were in the 80's. They shift a lot better and hold lower gears smartly when needed and provide more engine braking than they used to. My Acura has paddle shifters, I never found a need for them. Totally superfluous. However, the one time I drove in the mountains, I was glad I had them. The Mustang comes with paddle shifters standard so you have that control in that driving situtation easily which is useful even if you are not driving fast.

But I must say, that I get it - the sound of the "pauses" between gears of the manual is what is alluring to many of us, myself included.
Really? I feel tired listing to the gap. I always like the softer rpm drop when automatic transmission changes gear.

My plan is to go auto because Im a drag racing junkie and its cheaper than replacing all of the supporting mods with a manual.

To make the manual drivers on forums uncomfortable and try to assert dominance?

Serious answer is because I just prefer an auto, traffic can be a pain in the ass and the last thing I want to do when driving to work at 4am is shift. Plus I like drag racing.

Once Ford puts an A8 in here, I suspect the rift will grow even bigger. Undeniable performance advantages there.

Me personally, I chose an auto because I've never driven a manual. Fairly simple.

I had a 2014 GT/CS auto for about a month before I traded it in on the 0%/72 months with 1k cash back that Ford was offering on the S550. I really didn't like the sluggish throttle response in the 2014 GT and I almost immediately wished I had gone with a manual. So when I was building a car, I opted for the manual for my S550. I enjoy having absolute control over the car, even though I have heard tons of horror stories about the MT-82. I did remove the helper spring that is in the clutch pedal, and it feels as it should now. I will say that I test drove a 50th anniversary with an automatic for a couple days, and the sport+ mode really makes it more fun to drive; I think I would be happy with an auto due to the sport mode. In the end though, I just enjoy the control a manual gives you. To each his own though; I definitely don't look down on anyone with an auto.

Not an expert on this .. but I suspect it is that the 3.15 ratio with extra HP is a good match, plus the no-lift shifts from the auto help with keeping the turbo or SC "spooled up" and operating at their peak.
