I personally cannot wait. Even if it turns out to be hype I have not been this excited for something in gaming to come along in a long time.

Basically the PS VR should be a cheap means of entry, compared to the HTC and Rift options, to see what the fuss is about.

If it proves to be a worth while thing and it grows in popularity then the next 5-10 years could be very exciting. If PS VR matures and becomes as good as I think it may be then I can see getting a better HTC Vive type of setup to allow full movement within a defined space.

When I built my 25x35 garage I had some of this in mind when I hooked up wired LAN and cable along with doing 7.2 surround and a 130 inch projector. With a setup like the HTC Vive I could have a 10ftx15ft space to walk around in.

For those that dont know PS VR drops on the 13th. 400 for base headset, still need the camera and move controllers and 500 for the launch bundle that comes with everything but PS4.

Some damn good looking games already, each are worth youtubing.

Farpoint, brings back the light gun for a VR first person shooter but delayed.
Eve Valkarie, space combat.
Drive Club, racing game.
Battlezone, think World of Tanks meets Tron.

StarTrek Bridge Command, be a member of various crew duties.

Plus god knows what else. Game Stop is doing an early release tomorrow night at midnight ET and 9pm PST. Gonna try my damnedest to get one. Preorders sold out in Feb.

I barely even play my PS4. XB1 gets most of my play time. To me it's just another useless gimmick like 3d movies. I have no interest. My brother just won one from Taco Bell he's not sure if he's keeping or selling.

Wow that is cool he won. I was gonna try once or twice but I dont like TacoBell much. The hoops to jump through to win without purchase were a pain.

I dont see it being a gimmick if done correctly. The reviews from KindaFunnyGames has me solidly interested. One guy talked about it being so immersive that he found himself doing things in real life like he did in the game, like picking up objects at a store one day and having some goofy body language to reach for it.

People getting motion sick or even disoriented to the point that they walk funny after an intense session os just what I am looking for.

I am also watching HoloLense for augmented reality gaming but I am READY for a change.

I want my VirtuaCop style light gun cames back. That and some other stuff.

I'm currently very engaged in the VR/AR space, development, work in computer vision, was in SF working on a fairly "secret" project in AR.

I've actually had some hands-on with the PS VR, you're going to dig on it. This device should be the real start of xR moving into a more consumer market segment (pre-orders were more than double expectations).

Hololens is spectacular, just not [currently] cost effective, we had a couple in the office where I was working, the spatial localization is stunningly solid. Also keep an eye out on what comes from Magic Leap, trust me, they've got some insane tech on the way.

This next wave of xR is several orders-of-magnitude beyond the immersion and impact of 3D movies :)

Thanks for the name drop on Magic Leap. Hadnt heard of it before.

HoloLense and now Magic Leap seem like the kind of thing that could transform our daily life in public. Entire buildings redrawn as 3d cell shaded objects like Borderlands or completely reshaped so it is like Toon Town from Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

Cool stuff is definitely coming.

Hopefully the right blending of tech will take place and we wont wind up with dead end software developers locked to certain units like Microsoft has tried to do with exclusives.

This tech needs to be open as much as possible to get it to evolve at a faster rate.

MaskedRacer are you a programmer by chance or engineer? There is an aspect of PS VR that needs a 3rd party simulation/game for it that I dont think will come for awhile. Could be popular.

AR is going to be driven by functional/applied uses in engineering, medical, all sort of data viz, modeling, collaboration.

VR will continue in the entertainment type industries, gaming, movies, all sorts of interactive experiences, the latter including education, though AR will tap into visually driven learning as well (I've seen some incredible medical learning systems)

... but, yeah, to answer your question: I am a dev/engineer/architect, 25+ years in the industry

You have a pm.

As for VR. I really hope at some point we get something like James Cameron making a movie that can be experienced in VR. Given the way those movies are shot in 3d motion capturing, hopecully at some point it will be an experience where you can literally be in the middle of it. Not necessarily free to roam around like in a game but free to look around as if on rails and see a 360 degree scape of the environment. That is essentially what Cameron had available to him while shooting the scenes and using a 3d positioned camera to shoot the scenes.

Such things may one day come, maybe not 3 hour long exercises of The Last Of The Mohicans In Space but maybe cartoons or a Hardcore Harry type of thing that are shorter duration.

It is exciting that is for sure.

Always have been a PC gamer, my fav right now is Asphalt 8 : Airborne, great racing game with many different tracks, cars, upgrades and ways to win.

The download is free through the windows 10 app store but beware the game is so addictive that's it crazy, and yes upgrades, tokens and cars can be bought with real money, so watch your wallet, lol.

Wow.

Played for half an hour and some of the games took a lot out of me and these were just the demos.

The Battlezone game was awesome, the right combo of being able to control the tank with the combo while having things laid out in front of you in the tank cockpit while looking around. But it keeps you BUSY.

EVE Valkarie is awesome and cannot wait to play more but they screwed up the controls in the demo putting pitch/yaw on left stick versus pitch/roll on the right stick. This will mess me up for flying RC planes/quads in FPV. Hopefully I can get this changed in optiins on the full game. Getting friends to play it with the right lay out will also help them learn to fly FPV if I hand them my controller for one of my planes.

Job Simulator was an unexpected laugh. Standing up and being able to use the move controllers is an unexpected joy but also part of reason I tapped out after moving from the other games. Being able to move around a bit in a space is bitchin. The full VR movement stuff like HTC Vive where you can define a space to walk around in, that is the kind of experience I may one day buy all in for if I can set my garage for a 20x30 space.

Already glad I got it. The demo already showed me two games I know I am gonna enjoy the hell out of.
