I'm going with a staggered setup. Which tire is best for grip and performance as a DD with occasional "street race fun".

BFGOODRICH Continental
G-FORCE COMP-2 A/S or EXTREMECONTACT DWS 06

From what reviews I was able to find, the BF Goodrich scored just a tad higher. That tire was my first choice with the DWS 06 a close second. When I went to purchase my tires, the Goodrich were on National backorder, so I bought the DWS's. The Goodrich tire was less expensive by a couple hundred if I remember correctly too.

I have to say that I have NO COMPLAINTS about the DWS's. Way better wet traction than the P-Zero's and even when the temp was in the 20's I drive through corners like I did in summer. I keep remembering I probably shouldn't be doing this after I'm already 3/4 of the way through the corner. So far tires have stuck like glue.

Maybe one of the tire vendors will chime in with more "expert" advice.

I'd really like to hear what they say about the BF Goodrich vs. the DWS's.

I have a 2017 ecoboost pp convertible. I'm in Northern Iowa, and find the Summer only tires are not that great when it gets a little cool. So, I am looking at switching out my summer only tires to Conti DWS 06+ tires. Tire rack says I can go with 285 rears. Personally, I think I will like the staggered look, and the nicer ride with the DWS 06+. I am running the stock rims, and I am curious if there are any issues with stock rims and 285 width? Thanks

What size are your stock wheels? I'm not familiar with what comes on the Ecoboost. I wouldn't put 285s on anything narrower than 9.5 width, which is the size of GT PP1 rears.

The stocks that came on my GT premium were only 18x8 with 235 tires. I wouldn't put wider than 245 or (maybe 255) on those. Also, I wouldn't use staggered tire sizes unless my wheel sizes are also staggered.

Finally, why reply to an 8 year old thread instead of starting a new one with a title that's relevant to your question?

The 2017 Ecoboost PP came with Pirelli PZero, Summer Only, 255/40-19 all round. I believe the rims re all 19x9's.

Originally, I started researching for tire that has a little nicer ride, but still a good performer. This brought me to a popular tire store and that store said you can do a staggered setup with 285s in the rear. To be honest, doing a staggered setup never entered my mind till I read this. I thought this might look nice, but I also though this seemed like quiet a jump. So, I wanted some input from someone with an ecoboost pp mustang. This brought me to this forum, and I thought I would take a chance and see if I can get a reply. But yea, looking back now I should have just created a new post.

So, I am wondering if this can be done reliable, what is the change of in ride quality, and how does it look?

Reading your reply, you kind of confirms my suspicions. Thanks for your input.

With 9" width you could go maybe 275 rear and 255 front if you want them staggered but the wider tires will give a little more of a bulged look on the same wheel. They should drive fine. I just don't like losing the ability to rotate the wheels/tires.

BFG has a treadwear rating of 400, the Continental has a treadwear rating of 560. The lower the number the more sticky the tire.

That makes sense to me the lower the treadwear rating, the more sticky the tire. Question, would it would it be safe to say the Continentals would throw less rocks and sand up? One thing I hate, is these Pirellis throw up a lot of sand and rocks. Even when I look at the Pirellis, they are just coat with dust.

I wouldn't get caught up on UTQG that rating really only matters when comparing tires from the same manufacture.

For a DD good all around street tire the Conti. DWS06 does really well and the BFG is not a bad option either.

Here is a decent explanation:

Since manufacturers are expected to test their own tires, those test results can be skewed due to testing limitations and requirements. In fact, each manufacturer chooses their own baseline (Course Monitoring Tire (CMT)) tire against which they conduct their tests. That’s why not all test results are the same across different brands of tires, making it difficult to compare and shop based solely on UTQG ratings.
