What to use to clean Steeda intake?

Is it necessary or advised to use the steeda brand filter cleaner / oil, or are there better or acceptable options that will work just as well?

They actually sell a cleaning kit on their website that will give you that same blue color.

For me, I just recently cleaned mine. I happened to have a K&N filter cleaning kit laying around in the garage so I just used that. Followed the same instructions and re-oiled with the K&N oil. Everything worked perfectly, it just made the filter red instead of blue.

Yes the cleaning kit we sell is a great choice but you can also use K & N oil on the filter but it won't be that beautiful blue!

Definitely go with the Steeda or K&N. I bought a generic set from Summit racing and while it works, I get more oil on my hands than the filter with the cheap spray bottle they use.
