Thanks for the info. Thickness looks plenty thin.If it is easy to measure the L & W of the two metal pieces, that would be helpful. If not, I can extrapolate from the impression if I know if your phone is the bigger iPhone 6 vs. iP 4 or 5.
Is the base magnet the same size as the larger plate that you use? Any idea if the holding power (for touching top & bottom of phone) is lessened much if the smaller plate is used under a case?

Yeah, I've got the iP6. You can use either magnet but it won't hold the greatest if you only have a corner of the base touching the magnet, that's why I use both. I put the larger one slightly higher than the middle of my phone and put the smaller one below it. *not sure if you can tell from the pics* but it makes it more versatile as far as areas of the phone that it'll hold. I'm sure it would hold fine with the larger one, but in my case, why not use both.
