Funny, the only time I ever had another driver honk & wave was when I had just bought my '03 Mazda 6. Same model, same color; gave a honk & a wave through the sunroof. The only explanation for the reaction was the relative rarity of the car at the time. That being said, there are thousands of Mustangs on the road. Let's face it, we're not driving MG TCs.
Yea, I'm surprised to get any waves at all. I've even had a guy hop out to give me his card bc he wanted to know what exhaust and other goodies I have. The only other car that I got any waves/recognition was in my 300zx TT which was somewhat rare to see on the road in my area.

Unmodded Mustang drivers typically don't wave, so I've stopped waiving to them. My theory is this mostly filters out the people who just like Mustangs from the car enthusiasts to put money, time and elbow grease into their cars.
Maybe those who don't chase attention with car mods that are mainly intended to attract it (obviously lowered, louder exhaust, appearance mods, etc.) don't expect to get much attention in the first place and aren't always looking around to see if they're getting it. A matter of not needing attention to be secure in their choice of car and whatever mods they may have made to it rather than as an effort to be less sociable.

The people who don't wave, that I've noticed, are:
1) older Mustang owners (as in the owner's age, not the car's age), the people you usually see coming out of the tennis club, golf course, or country club. Couldn't care less what you're driving
There's a strong hint that car enthusiasm is at best secondary for folks like that.

I always wave when I see another 15'+ Mustang and usually when I see an older one as well. I'll give a wave to V6's and EB's too. No discrimination from me.

That said, it's pretty rare to get a wave back.

I guess for me this all stems from the WRX crowd. Back when I had my WRX, everyone would always wave at each other, much like Jeeps. Not so now.

I'm in my late 50s and have had mustangs since 1974. I've found that the region of the country has a bit to do with getting the 'nod' or a wave. Back east, especially in NC, folks would wave, blink lights and stop to say hi. Here in Ca its a good bit different. I give the nod or wave to all nice cars, new or old, domestic or import, its just being friendly and a knowledging another persons handiwork. With that said, I get more waves and stop light talk from new camero owners...

I guess you are thinking about motorcycle riders too. I used to give 2 fingers either up or to the side to Harley's only. After Harley's 100th anniversary party in Milwaukee, I got Harley'd out, and started waving to all bikers. I once waved to a couple of guys I probably shouldn't have, they immediately slowed down and turned around to meet up with me. Umm.. Not to judge people by there looks, but I thought maybe it wasn't to see if I'm having a good day and took off like a bat out of hell.

I do the same with mustangs and all classic vehicles. I give the piece sign over the steering wheel. If they wave or not, I don't look for it. Up to them. They might not see me until after we passed.

Do what feels right to you. There is no rule.

I give two fingers up from the steering wheel no matter the year of Mustang. In my Tiger, I flash my lights at any other VLBC. Vintage Little British Car.

I would get the deuces with my WRX from other WRX/STI drivers a lot. But with those cars they aren't as common place as Mustangs. Also to be honest after 4 years of ownership it got a bit tiresome. Especially when I had people in the car and they were confused why random people were saying hi to me.

In SoCal there are a ton of Mustangs, a lot are rentals. I rather just enjoy driving my car over trying to give all the other random Mustang drivers recognition. If another waves or gives a look at me I will give a nod back but that's as far as I will go.

a lot of the time i notice its hard as shit to see inside the car from the outside perspective, especially if you're going on opposite side of road or fast on highway..so most of the time its probably cuz they can't even see you.

I've gotten waves from other Mustangs multiple times and I'll wave back. One guy waved and had a big cheesy grin on his face like I was his long lost friend. I had to laugh.

I usually give a quick flash of the lights if we are crossing paths. Seem to get more responses from other s550's. Never know what to think when I pull up next to another mustangs that clearly shows the owner is a car guy but yet will not even head nod. So I just keep going with my day in hopes to find a more social mustang owner.

One of my neighbors has a S197 GT. This afternoon he was pulling into his house as I was driving out. I flashed my brights and he threw me a rev as I drove by.
