I'm looking for an after market remote start for my manual trans V6. Interested by Viper's smart start but i haven't found much info on it.

Has anyone ever used it with a manual trans?

Is it reliable?

Any Reviews out there?

Thanx

I know this isn't the info you're looking for, but I wouldn't go messing with the clutch safeties. I've got a manual too, and looked into it and it's so sketchy and the best one I found doesn't work if you open the doors after you get out the first time, for safety reasons. I say just take a few minutes and run out early to heat her up man. Best of luck.

Funny story about disabling the clutch switch. Before my Stang, I had a MazdaSpeed3. Disabled the clutch sensor and had a remote start installed. Took the car to get new tires put on for the winter. It was starting to snow outside and the guy pulls my car up. As I'm checking out, I instinctively hit the remote start button. The car drove itself into a truck in the parking lot with the manager of the shop pushing from the front and me trying to jump inside and hit the brakes. If that truck wasn't there, it would have went down a steep embankment and into a gas station. Lucky for me that it was a huge construction truck that took 0 damage. The shop owner didn't care and let me leave. The car would not stall and just keep dragging the car forward. The damn starter had enough torque, along with a really short first gear, to pull the car in the dry with the back tires locked.

As careful as I always thought I would be with it, over about 4 years, there were a half a dozen incidents where I swore I left it in neutral. It's so convenient that I would do it again, but I would NOT do it without figuring a way to wire in a safety switch myself.

The 5901 that I had made you shut the car off in a certain sequence if you wanted to enable smart start/remote start, basically forces you to put the car in neutral to even get the key fob to sync with the viper and recognize the remote start feature.
You can also get the 5901 without the smartphone feature for a $100 more. Come with 2 key fobs, 1 lcd screen and the other just button strip

ha, oops. In college I knew someone who did the exact same. He wanted to show off to some girls, left it in gear, boom car starts and rolls into like 4 other cars.

After that you must of been second guessing if you let it in gear for a while. I know i would of been obsessive about it. I once started my car and let go of the clutch then realizing i was in gear in front of a concrete bloc :frusty:

This, I had a remote starter on my old '09 Cobalt SS, it wouldn't let you activate the remote starter unless you did a particular sequence. It was something along the lines of: put the car in neutral, pull up the e-brake, remove the key (hit the button in the Mustang's case?) and close the door. The car would not shut off until the door was closed, and if you didn't do that exact sequence, it wouldn't start via the remote. Basically the only way you could leave it in gear and remote start it would be to leave the car in gear, running, let your foot off the clutch (have the car lurch forward!) and then get out. There was nothing in the shifter to indicate it was in neutral, but you'd sure know if you left it in gear and tried to do that sequence!

Of course, electronics could fail, so there is always a risk. Some of us are willing to take the risk. Just never hand the remote starter over to a dealer/technician/friend/etc, and never trust that it was left in neutral unless you were the last one to drive it.

I will also add I have been actively pursuing a remote starter for my Mustang. As of now, Fortin has finally released a bypass module, but I don't think anyone else has. I have yet to find a local installer who said they can supply that particular bypass, but I'm sure somebody should. So as of now, still no luck for me. I believe the bypass module will HAVE to be installed with an aftermarket starter as well, the other Fortin kit which supports programming it as a triple press on your factory FOB won't work with manual transmission...I think.
