.......and by the way human induced global warming is a load of bollux. When polar ice increases it never makes the news.
I don't think you can call it a load of bollux. Its debateable yes and still the scientists have to prove it one way or the other but I don't think it can be written off as bollux just yet.

Before we get in to a debate, I am more on the bollux side of the fence than the other but I feel both arguments have their merits.

I do about 2k in my van, just use it for putting my bike in, for track days, I still have to pay ÂŁ265 VED same as someone doing 100k a year.

Don't we pay enough VAT on fuel? Are we not one of the most expensive countries anyway?
Just another rip off

I totally disagree with VED,
If someone wants to buy a vehicle that does 15MPG, then why penalise them again with higher VED, they getting penalised twice.
They already paying the government a lot more in tax in fuel duty.
Fuel duty seems to be a great 'catch all' way to tax vehicles - broadly speaking the more you use the roads or 'polute', the more you pay. However, the more you add a disproportionate amount of tax to a commodity, the more lucrative it makes selling it on the black market. Tobacco is a good example. Also, from a political point of view, it has historically been better to 'spread' taxes ('direct and 'indirect'), presumably to make them more palatable. So we have VED, fuel duty, VAT, new car tax, road tolls, council parking fines etc. Not to mention that the money you spend on these has already been subject to income tax, NI, etc. What you count as "fair" entirely depends on your political views! Fair enough. What I do know is that my Mustang V8 will have better whole life environmental credentials than a Prius (not to mention all it's other credentials) :D

Warming and Cooling cycles are naturally occurring. The excess gasses we pump into the atmosphere are not.

Climate change is 50% human, 50% natural.

Though, the only reason I support the strict emissions tests on cars is because the gasses that come out of a car engine are extremely toxic to pretty much anything. Less NOx and CO can only be a good thing - when it comes to CO2 you can pretty much offset that by planting a few more acres of trees.

Mileage based VED or Road Fund License or whatever it was called at the time was proposed at one one time a few years ago but it quickly went away, something to do with mothers on the school run being penalised or something. I don't remember all the details, but it seemed like a good idea if it was properly applied.
