Michigan is technically a landlocked state despite it simultaneously having one of the longest shorelines.

Michigan is a peninsula. Actually it’s two peninsulas but we‘ll cover that in a minute. And the main peninsula is surrounded by three of the Great Lakes (Huron, Michigan, and Superior) which is why there is so much shoreline. Now the fun facts….

1. Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (the U.P. to us Michiganders) is not connected by land mass to the mainland / lower peninsula. It is actually attached to Wisconsin and used to be part of Wisconsin. In 1835 Michigan and Ohio were on the verge of armed conflict (war) over possession of the port of Toledo. Both territories claimed the area as their property. The federal government settled the matter by granting Toledo to Ohio and granting the U.P. to Michigan. Wisconsin was like “WTF?”
2. The Mackinac (pronounced Mackinaw) Bridge that connects the U.P. to the mainland is the longest suspension bridge in the Western Hemisphere.
3. In 1989 a woman driving a Yugo across the Mackinac Bridge was literally blown off the bridge by high winds. Since then bridge authorities arrange for semi truck escorts for small vehicles on high wind warning situations.

Actually Michigan touches 4 of the Great Lakes - Superior, Michigan, Huron, and Erie. Although the Lake Erie shoreline is not that much, but can be seen in the lower right corner of your map.
