I've bought all my more recent Mustangs used. All GTs. 3 sticks, 2 autos. 4 S197s from 17K miles on the odo to 72K miles on the odo. Every one of them has been just fine. I've modded, supercharged 2 (soon 3), changed suspensions, etc. Sold every one of them in perfect working order.
The newer Mustangs are one of the most dependable, best engineered, fun to mod car ever made.
Nothing like the old muscle cars of the sixties which were maintennance nightmares. Parts didn't fit properly, especially aftermarket parts.

Look at the carfax. Check the oil and smell of the auto trans fluid. Look at wear around the seating area. Often that will tell you if the car did a lot of "ins and outs" from city, short term driving. I bought all these "later" Mustangs used in other states. I looked closely at the photos. Checked the car faxes. Looked the car up on Google and found most were from auctions. Most off lease. Use common sense. Look at fine scratches on the roof, trunk lid. That tells you that the previous owner set his coffee cup or jacket there. Not a good sign.

3 things on these cars

The seats get hammered quickly, paint is thin and gets chipped, rear tires burn up quickly if abused.

If the paint isn't chipped, the seats look good, and the rear tires are good you should have a winner.

I’ve bought a lot of used Shelby’s and boss mustangs in the past. Those owners seem to only drive those cars on sunny days and such. Low mileage seems the norm. But I still get the ford service report and car fax to verify one owner cars. Buying a low mileage GT would probably be the same as long as there are no mods to the engine.

I'm picking up a used 2016 GT with 11k miles Saturday and have no reservations. Buying from the Ford dealer it was originally purchased from and serviced at so I know its a one owner car and has been serviced correctly. Car is very clean and runs perfectly, and if it acts up I've got warranty for a few years. Saved about $10k over a comparable new one.

Used cars do take a certain degree of research and due diligence. You're probably better off buying from private party in general but ones from a dealer, especially CPO will usually be okay too. If everything checks out, I'd say 95% will be great buys.

One nice thing about a good used car is all the crap is done, i.e. Rattles, stuff wrong, etc. That's someways my concern new are the problems. I've ordered a mustang new, to my specs 36 years ago. Paint was think. Needed repaint new, for handle being off, intermittent electrical. Never had that stuff used plus the savings money wise allows misting. Etc
