By now we have seen a number of reviews by Aussies of the Mustang. I preface this saying I'm not a mechanic, nor an expert Journo. I had the pleasure of being in the States and hired a Mustang for 19 days. I picked it up from Budget JFK Airport and drove it north along the coastline to Maine where I turned left and drove across Vermont to Buffalo/Niagara Falls then drove down to Virginia and Washington DC where I stayed for 10 days before returning to New York.
The vehicle was a Fastback V6 Mustang in Base model format. It had cloth seats which seemed comfortable and durable, but I saw close up a number of cars with the leather and they looked quite nice. The rest of the interior was good, although I have doubts about those holes in the back seat for child restraints which sit there like an eye half closed.. The arm rests in the door were soft, padded and nice when resting your elbow. The seat back rests had lumber support which felt like it was pushing my spine out my belly button. The back rest was narrow, but the seat base was pretty flat and wide.
Performance wise, the car drove great, the V6 is a great engine and I would never have even considered this had it been coming to Australia, I would now. The aussie Falcon inline 6 cylinder engine reminds me of Taxis but this motor was nothing like it. I tried out the Sport and comfort modes, tried with the Advance trac and traction controlled turned off at various times and overall I found the car nice to drive. Sport mode seemed to make it squat and go. Normal mode was just easy to use. The paddle shifters were OK but again it was just easy to put it in D or S and leave it. I don't know really what comfort mode did.
I cruised along the Interstates and found the little corner mirror things at the top of the mirrors were handy to see into the blind spots which are large on this car. Looking across to the other side of the car the headrest obscures the quarter window so you really need that extra vision to change lanes, especially in USA traffic where cars seemingly appear from nowhere. I don't know if this was a Car Hire thing or that's how the mirror come?
The body panels all seemed good to me but I am not fussy about that, the shape of the car is just beautiful and I found myself just staring at it from near and afar a lot. Also from inside the car looking across and back that sleek fastback silhouette just pops out at you and I kept getting distracted wanting to look more at it. I recall someone in the US posting a photo of the view from inside and it's just pure sexyness. The fastback shape is much more attractive than the convertible (a biased point of view), but I saw the convertible get a bit of attention in car parks also.
The old saying photos don't do it justice are correct as the wheels actually really were pretty nice up close and suit the car well. This car also had a spoiler which whilst not the same as the GT one was also OK on the car.
The dials and digital display were all fantastic and easy as to use. There were so many readouts and functions, the font they use is really classy, and the way they have done it is great. I loved this aspect the most about the car. The bits that you use all the time are the bits they have spot on. The easy entry and the push button start are great to use. I actually started it remotely once by accident, but then couldn't remember how to do it again. (Budget took out the user manual).
The view out the front was great, although I don't like the triangular bonnet shape jutting upwards, but I did get used to it by the end of my trip. The view out the back was good and the reverse camera works great.
All in all I loved the car and can't wait until my GT arrives with a few more options than this Base model had. I took a few pictures of other mustangs that appeared in my car park in Virginia whilst I stayed there as well for some colour contrast. I'm glad I didn't go with red and guard, Magnetic just looked dull, Ingot Silver looked great in the rain, and I saw a DIB up near Buffalo on the Highway and it looked fantastic, but I didn't see one up close. White looked white. Hopefully my pics will attach properly, I took a number from the right side just to give you guys a good idea of what it will look like for us.
The boot is also a big space, it held my large suitcase, sports gear and a big 48 litre esky, with some room left over.
Also Thumbs up to Grimace and his lovely partner for shouting me a coffee and talking Mustangs in Virginia!!!
