Hi guys, I have a bottom mount on3/custom turbo kit with Precision 6266 ball bearing turbos.

The turbos produce a bit of smoke on WOT and a little bit on startup. We've made sure the return lines aren't fighting gravity and we plan on adding some check valves off the turbos.

Any other ideas on what could be causing this? We aren't using a restrictor on the feed line (-10 AN) but I'm told that might be a place to start.

you definitely should be running restrictors on the feeds. And check valves on the feed and return. Also are you sure the feed is -10?

Why are restrictors a must here (like is that because of our car's oil pressure/do precisions always need restrictors/having a bottom mount warrants it)?

And yes I was told the an size is -10

And yep, positive the feed is -10
return should be a -10. Your feed should be -3 or -4. Returns are necessary Because bb turbos don’t require as much oil as journal turbos. The excess oil could be seeping past the turbo seals and contributing to your smoking issues

Ok verifying the feed line sizes now. The guy helping me said they were -10 when i asked about the feed and return but maybe it was a typo.

And what size restrictor should we start with? I'm assuming start big and keep getting smaller until hopefully the smoking stops?

Edit: Just got verification. He said -10 for everything minus feed, which is -4.

That sounds right. Contact precision regarding restrictor sizing and get yourself Some check valves and you should be good

The issue is 100% the check valves and restrictors. You can get away with 1 right before the tee in the feed or 1 at each turbo really doesn't matter. As far as check valves one at each turbo won't work properly you need one after the pump in the return. Do both of those and I bet you won't be smoking anymore.

I just got off the phone with precision and they don't recommend restrictors unless absolutely necessary. He said I should start with a 0.030" and that should still supply enough flow.

He also said on the oil feed side should use a spring loaded check valve while the return side can use a more traditional flapper one.

I'll also be throwing in a Turbowerx scavenge pump to replace the on3 one.

Forgot to mention that it seems that only the passenger side is the one smoking.

I bet if you pulled the actual turbos off both would have oil in them one is just holding in more. The oil is pooling and leaking through due to not have a check valve. You 100% need it with this system no way around it.

Precision will always tell you not to run a restrictor because if a turbo fails due to oil starvation the customer would blame them for saying not to use one. It's perfectly fine to run restrictors with no issue.

Also, I just realized I didnt mention the oil feed also need a check valve. I would just put one before the tee along with the restrictor.

I would recommend not getting a turbowerx pump unless its the exa-pump. I got the spartan and it was not able to pump enough oil and made my car smoke really bad.

Check my build thread....lots of info on this topic.

This will solve your problem:

1 check vavle at the "T" of your turbo feeds.

1 check valve at the "out" of your scavenge pump.

Buy them here:

https://www.rbracing-rsr.com/oilsystems.htm

FWIW, my car has 0 smoking issues or leaking turbos. However, i had the exact same issues as you prior to my installing of the check valves and it was the passenger side turbo that was leaking for me too....

It’s the larger pump which I believe is the exa pump. 50 psi capacity

I would go with the other company recommended in this thread

https://www.rbracing-rsr.com/oilsystems.htm

Not sure how noisy it is but it can't be worse than the on3 pump, gimmie11s can give a better idea.
The chinese pumps like on3 and the one i have are noisy AF, but they pump oil fantastic. They are noisy because of the straight cut gears. I want to have some helical gears cut for my pump, but thats a pipe dream... im sure i wont get around to it. Im used to the noise by now anyway.

The pumps on the rbracing website are top-shelf pumps and theyre quiet. Pricey, but good shit.

Wanted to get your input on how critical it is that the return lines going to the scavenge pump are the same length? How close in length is close enough?
