It would depend a lot on the rear ratio. Accelerating to 80 in 5th may not be extreme. Whipping it into 5th at 80 and dumping the clutch might be. Whipping it into 3rd, however, an easy mistake to make, would explain all the symptoms.

I'd certainly not resist the possibility of a missed shift which can be done without much trouble in this tranny with the gates close together. Outside defective clutch a missed shift to 3d would indeed be catastrophic and perhaps the clutch was the weak link in that paradigm.

I don't think a missed shift to 3rd would be that bad. At least in a GT.

The V6 has dual mass flywheel. Not sure why, but its something to break.
