Hello, had an accident and pretty sure my insurer is going to try and total it. Wondering if it’s worth fighting and getting a second opinion from another repair shop?

damage is all on the one door, fender and front bumper, and the indicator and fog light, possibly. Rear quarter panel looks fine other than some minor scratches. Maybe some suspension damage but it didn’t look too bad.

Did this really happen in Japan or Australia?
looks like a lot of damage and even more hidden. I’m guessing totaled.

Australia, my state just has some Japanese style number plates available and I got them for the hell of it.

I have the choice of repairer so I think I'm going to get a second opinion anyway. If they both say totalled, then I'll accept that

I'm gonna go with totaled. I don't know how things are downunda. But Body shop prices here have gotten wicked high, and OEM parts availability has been suspect at best. Sure you can get 9/10 parts you need...but that 1 you can't, means your car sits for months.

I actually called and got the quote from the repairer,. their total was $37k. I see quite a few line items for the rear of the car though, even though it's mostly untouched (looks that way to me at least).

The most expensive parts (>$1k) are the following: fender (FR3Z16006B), front spoiler $1k (FR3Z17D957 BA), rear left quarter panel

(looks fine to me? some tiny scratches on it though $1.6k) (FR3Z6327841 A), engine carrier (JR3Z5C145A), headlamp assembly (FR3Z13008P), 2 wheels, $2,400 (FR3Z1007Y, FR3Z1007X), steering gear $5.5k (GR3Z3504E), brake caliper $1.1k (JR3Z2B121A), a door $1.6k (FR3Z6320125A), then 2x tyres for $1,125

The total for the rear quarter panel/bumper alone is nearly $6k, made up of: rear bumper spoiler $308, rear quarter glass $313, labour for the renewal of the rear quarter panel $828, rear bumper repair $138, rear bumper plastic $117, new rear quarter painting $289, rear quarter repair painting <50% (idk what this is) $138, rear quarter itself $1.6k, left rear wheel hub $347, left rear steering knuckle $444, left rear wheel $1200

Unfortunately this is the world we live in. As someone who grew up in panel shops in Australia and still have mates in the industry this is the result Of the ruling everything has to be brand new , not repaired Parts Or second parts.
the crash just looks like a low speed , dirt road drift fail…. Not a high speed impact ?? Any pics of the skid marks.

Unfortunately… It won’t even make it to the auctions , it will be snapped up by “one of the boys” in the circle of trust and fixed for less than 1/2 the quote and be back on the road in weeks.
I see it up here in qld pickles auctions, well with the cars that actually get there haha. they go for $10,000 all the time and I scratch my head why these cars are Not repaired.
I saw a Mach 1 a month ago it had gone into a barbed wired fence at about Walking pace as it didnt get though it. So , front bar and bonnet and passenger side fender. so guessing written off By insurance company and then made it to auction. Then sold repairable write-off by the auction.

it’s a pretty crap system. Insurance companies don’t want to cover any repair warranty problems. So it’s easier just to write it off and give you the money to buy a new car.
In turn , your car now shows up at the auctions as a repairable write off , not WOVR or written off vehicle.

I had a brand new ford escape that I was sitting at traffic lights and got re-ended at 80kph. Once the quote got passed $12,000 the wrote it off. It never went to auction and 3 months later i traced the vin and it was registered in NSW. It’s money Wagon wheel for sure.

Different states have different classifications but all very similar in the end.

im honestly considering having it be written off as a repeatable write off and buying it from them for salvage value, and then trying to get it fixed myself. I don’t know if that’s just me being a stubborn prick or not though.

If I were to, I would source a bumper, fender and door from a wrecker, buy wheels/tyres (can get both very cheap) and send it to a shop to do everything else.

may be a shit idea though. Only worth it if I come out massively ahead

yep absolutely possible. The fact airbags haven’t gone off and most of the damage is only superficial, even the back 1/4 panel looks fine other than the bottom where it meet the sill. Most reasonable panel beaters would fix that car with there eyes shut. given there is always the stuff you don’t see That can add to the price.
If you find a rear end hit diner car in the same colour At wreckers and get everything you need off that. Could be a good way of doing it.
