I have a few threads of road tar on the black rear panel.

Anyone know if bug and tar remover is safe on the black plastic. Pretty sure its not painted. If nobody posts I'll try some on the side edge but since I don't think its polished might not be a good test.

If the store bought stuff is bad for the plastic, what do people use to get tar off this part?

I have Turtle Wax Bug & Tar. It does work although I don't know if it can cause a problem for plastics. I will have to review the instructions.

I've used CarPro Trix, which is a mixture of their TarX tar remover and IronX iron remover.

I used it according to the directions (not in direct sunlight, not letting it dry) and it worked fine. I only had tar on the lower portion of the front fender, and it worked really well. I did spray it on the decklid cover and didn't notice any adverse effects.

That was the ONLY stuff the local Walmart had. Got it when picking up some groceries there. The instructions don't say anything about plastic BUT they say it is for headlights and the picture of the car on the can definitely has plastic headlights so .....

Update: The Turtle Wax bug and Tar foam worked great.

And unlike bug and tar removers I've used before, it didn't have any solvent smell.

WD 40 works good.
X2

WD40 works wonders on a lot of different types of sap, goo, bug guts, dealership decals, road tar, etc.

It will not harm any painted surface or clear coat; been using it for years with no ill effects.

Hit your local automotive paint supply store and get wax and grease remover. It doesnt matter what brand it is. Should be available in quarts. Its whats used prior to spraying to clean the surface after the prep is done. It most cases its cheaper then the knockoff stuff sold at the other various outlets.

I have used WD40 on paint. But in this case we are talking about bare plastic so an unknown regarding WD40 effecting the mirror finish. Same for needing to rub on it to get the tar off regardless of whatever was used. I've never been a fan of any Turtle Wax product but this stuff took the tar off the plastic with no rubbing or harm to the shine.
