Hello friends,

Today hasn't been the best day. I wanted to finally update my Mustang's infotainment to 3.4 using the USB method. I downloaded the software off Ford's website after inputting my VIN, and went off of their instructions. I placed the USB into the car, and it then said it was downloading an update. The screen said to remove the USB and went black. It has not worked properly since.

A little bit of context regarding my vehicle, it is a base 2021 GT. I bought a Sync 3 system 2 years ago, used Forscan to program it, and gained all the features of Sync 3. I forgot the exact year of the system, but it might be 2020 or 2019 if I remember correctly. I used Forscan to turn the start-up animation into the Ford GT "GT Performance" start-up screen, as well as adjusted the theme to be a dark color. I remember reading that Sync 3.4 does not have access to these, but I also remember reading it was okay to update your Sync 3, you would just lose access to the Splash Screen and Theme.

The screen now displays some interesting characteristics. It is a completely black screen but I can tell it is still being backlit. When using the stereo power button and forward skip to do a hard reset to the system, the Ford logo would show, disappear, and then the screen would be black again. The reverse camera still works. The radio also works when I increase the sound. I went back to Forscan to readjust 7D0-02-01, setting it to the Mustang Splash screen to see if that would change anything. The only thing that changed was that when I did the hard reset, it now showed the normal Mustang splash screen. I also adjusted 7D0-03-01 since that was what had the Ford GT Theme, I believe I now set it to the normal Sync 3 theme for 8-inch screens. Nothing has changed, unfortunately.

If anyone can help me resolve these issues I would be grateful. I could take it to a dealer but I'm sure I would be charged, so I'm trying to reach out for advice before that. Thanks in advance!

Not sure if it would work or not. Cyan Labs has a specific warning on their site about certain years of Sync units being bricked if the wrong files were uploaded, so all bets are off.

I had the same issue, when I changed to the GT logo, after the dealer updated the SYNC3 system. Fortunately, they fixed it by replacing the APIM as the car was under warranty at the time. Apparently, Ford removed the GT start up screen from Mustang updates causing the black screen, hope you get it resolved soon

Thanks for introducing me to those threads, there looks to be a lot of information in there

Ah shoot, that might mean I have to change the APIM then. I'll see if I can do anything about it without having to get the entire unit replaced, thank you!

Something I might try if I could get the pre update files on a USB stick would be to try to force it back to the way it was.
I'd put the USB in then immediately do the force reboot trick to see if it's programed to look for the USB on startup.
It might work and might not but I would probably try.

following and wishing you the best of luck.
Thank you friend, I managed to get it resolved which I will explain below. Beautiful Mach 1 by the way.

I roamed the Cyanlab forums for quite a while. I went to check up on my car to see if anything had changed. When I got back, to my surprise there was a 4 inch screen on the top left of my 8 inch screen, the rest of the screen was black.

I was very confused, but I realized that the package Ford gave me was for my 4 inch screen, since that was what came with my car originally. The package literally said "Sync 3.4", so I didn't even realize the 4 inch screen even had a "3.4" firmware update. I didn't have the VIN of the vehicle the original APIM was from.

I then went to Cyanlabs, and from all the browsing I did through their forums, I ended up downloading their Sync 3 Installer. I then used it to install an update package for the 8 inch Sync 3.4 onto my USB. I was careful to make sure I knew what Sync my vehicle currently had (which was 3.4 but for the 4 inch screen) and that it was a <2020 model year APIM. Having a 2020 or higher APIM, or inputting the wrong current firmware in your car into the Sync 3 Installer software could potentially lead to bricking your APIM.

I then plugged it in, I got a notification on the teeny 4-inch screen that it was updating, and after 20 minutes, Sync 3.4 was running! I'm just thankful I didn't brick my Sync 3, or had to fork out cash for another APIM or dealer repair. In the rare case this happens to someone, I hope this information is able to help.

Glad to hear you got it fixed! To be honest I didn't hold out a lot of hope for my suggestion 😕.
Kiddos to whizkidder for directing you to a helpful site!
And to you for posting your experience and successful resolution.
