Huh I would think that would be too wide (unsafe) for a 9" rim

No issues. They clear inside the fenders, even with a 1" drop, and the tire shop didn't even blink when I asked them to do it. I also know others running the same tires on the same wheels for a while without issues. Not sure why you would think it to be unsafe. Cars have been running tires wider than the wheels for a long time. I could see potential issues if I was trying to squeeze a 305 on a 9" wide wheel, but not the 285.

You can fit 3 in the back seats standing up and a 4th in the trunk.

I had to move my seat too far forward so I was a bit uncomfortable, if I was to do it again I would drop one into the spare spot and stack another tire on it. That way seems far better.
