I heard that the gills on the 2018 won't be disabled for the UK. Begs the question why were they disabled on our cars.

They aren't disabled, they are completely absent. The tribar gills on the 15-17 cars apparently were not compliant with pan Europan lighting regulations. On the 2018 Ford deliberately redesigned the headlight units so the projectors are more backward and further away from the tribar gills. That way they now have become compliant and will be featured on the export cars as well.
