Only related to Mustangs as I was in mine when I saw this, and I can't decide if it was clever or not...

On the A34 near Oxford last week, I saw a Mercedes with German plates, driving like a bit of a pillock - undertaking dangerously, etc. - and then getting stuck behind slow traffic, etc.

I spend a bit of time in Germany, and I realised the plate wasn't quite right; it showed K88-8ENN with a short "-" and "not quite standard" shaped letters. But it did have the "D" roundel, and wasn't in the UK spec white & yellow reflectives.... and then I realised it was a RHD merc, and the plate should have read K888 ENN.

I guess most people (traffic wardens, police, CCTV, speed cameras) will just see the "German" roundel and so ignore it, so maybe the driver is being a bit clever.

On the other hand, all it needs it someone a bit pedantic like me to realise what he has done - but in reality what can be done? A fixed penalty ticket for an incorrect plate - or does this get into a potential "fraud" type of thing?

I was more than a little annoyed with his driving - is there anywhere "official" I can complain to? I really must sort out a dash cam!

Seriously complaining about another road user, first of don't waste the polices time. If you really want to follow other road users with a dashcam and then send footage to the police of people making road manoeuvres you don't agree with I'd say your far better either getting police training to become a traffic office or do something better with your spare time.

A dashcam is a good idea in case you get in an accident or witness a serious accident, this is when they are of use. :)

So if he wasn't driving like a nob would you still want to report him for dodgy plates, i'm guessing not and the only reason is because his driving style upset you, just let it go these people get caught in time without you having to stress about it.

It's been a styling thing with owners of German cars for a while now, lots of VW owners get this type of plate. As long as I the fonts etc are correct, I don't see any harm, other than driving like a knob!

Up to £1000 fixed penalty fine for this sort of numberplate nonsense. If it is used to evade other prosecutions then perverting the course of justice can come into play. Maximum penalty; ahem, life imprisonment!

Relax, he'll get stuffed eventually. Just hope he doesn't take anyone with him.

If he genuinely drove dangerously (you know, like Croyde ;) ) Then send your dash cam footage to the Bill. make sure you erase all your offences first though.

Lol @ Croyde.

A fixed penalty is about £60, had one about 5yrs ago. Don't know the current rate.

Still have the private plate as it spelt my name(no gaps) and never had issues since then. Bobbies rarely have time to stop you for your plate.

There are loads of people around here that drive about with plates that are wrongly spaced.

If it was an attempt at subversion, I'm sure he (or she) wouldn't be the only one and I expect that most traffic cops would be wise to this 'scam'. Either way, if he was driving dangerously, he'd get pulled regardless of whether those on duty clocked the dodgy plates.
