Hi guys,

I've been driving through Germany recently and kept encountering a road sign that was new to me. It's a big blue rectangle that reads 'Wasserschutzgebiet'. Sometimes a certain distance is also mentioned underneath (like, this sign is valid over the next 800 metres, or 1.5 kilometres, or whatever).
Now, I do speak German and know what a Wasserschutzgebiet means from a linguistic point of view. It's an area where waters are protected. Fine. But what on Earth is this supposed to mean to me, as a driver? Does it mean I'm not allowed to stop the car and go pee in the local river? I wasn't going to do that anyway. So what's the idea? What exactly am I, as a driver, supposed to do when I see this sign at the side of the road?

Thank you.

OK, so if I'm driving a tanker carrying pollutants, then I should drive carefully through these areas, to avoid rolling over and spilling my cargo. Right.
But shouldn't I do that anyway? Why do I need a sign to tell me it's not OK to drive recklessly and spill my load at this particular place, as if it were OK to do it at other places? "Please make sure you don't have a massive accident over the next 800 metres. After that it's fine, you can have one." 😁

We used to be able to assume people had common sense here also. The good old days…..

For you as a car driver it has no meaning.

There is also sign 269, which completely prohibits the passage of water-polluting substances, or sign 261, which prohibits the passage with a load of any goods subject to ADR marking.
The sign 354, which you have seen, may be understood as a reminder, just as there is a sign "Buckle up!" at some on-ramps of some US highways.

I think it is helpful to know where a water protection area is, perhaps not so much a the driver (who must have ADR training for dangerous goods) but much more for those who rush to help in the event of an accident.

I see.
I thought it was meant for drivers, considering that it's always placed at the side of the road, just like any other traffic sign, and that I found most of them in uninhabited areas, where only drivers would see them.
Hence my confusion - what can I do about it? 😁
