Power steering groaning

I've noticed lately that when on full lock I'm getting a groaning noise from the steering. Assuming that the power steering is hydraulic rather than electric, could this be due to the oil needing to be replaced/low? It's done about 16,000 miles and I assume it wasn't changed at the 10,000 mile service?? If not, is it a case of I'm not being mechanically sympathetic and need to back off a bit when on full lock?

Ah OK so my assumption was wrong!

It's cold tyres, I used to worry about this when I first got it, you'll notice after about 10-15mins driving, that there's no groan on full lock. If there is, I maybe wrong - but I'd then be checking your bushings.

Yeah, definitely not cold tyres as I notice it as I'm reversing into my drive after a 30 mins drive home. If I ease off the steering wheel it does stop, and it's only started to do it recently. Looks like I'll have to get the garage to have a look.

It could be tyre-scrub due to the limited slip diff - used to get it on my Vette on full lock, but even easing off a tiny bit solved the problem. If you try it on a painted multi-storey car park surface it should change from a groan to a God-awful screech as the front tyres get pushed across the surface.

Finally got round to getting this groaning looked at - apparently there was some trim hanging down rubbing on the wheel, which they've tied up with a cable tie, so we'll see how long that lasts..... God knows what trim that was, but at least I wasn't imaging it.

I'd assume it's the arch liner, glad it was an easy fix though!
