I am also thinking the same. I know the Roush plastic texture is not super smooth, so not sure how they would look with glossy paint applied...

i painted mine. yes its texture plastic. its a bitch to get smooth. i gave up after an hour of sanding. the plastic does not sand easily. and i didnt get the texture all off.
I used the paint from automotivetouchup.com they have spray paint that matches your paint code, and have the plastic promoter, primer and clear coat.
i got 2 cans each of primer, color, and clear, and sanded the primer coat a few times. and put about 3 coats of color and clear.

mines been on for about 6 months and paint looks ok, no peeling. color match was close id say 95%. i ended up with a few imperfections. (always has this with spray paint in a can.)

its a pain, take your time, sand a bunch, spray dry it and sand it again. i should have spent more time wet sanding, but got tired of doing it (you get the picture)
Mine is deep impact blue.

for something like that on exterior I'd take it to a an actual body shop so they could get it smooth and painted perfectly. especially since it's on exterior.

On a black car would you paint them or leave them the way they come from Roush?

Would love to see a close up shot of those, but from what you can see in the two photos, it looks fantastic. I want to paint my vents gloss black and then get a gloss black rear spoiler. I can order the spoiler already painted, but will have to do the hood vents myself.

Definitely doable. I hated the plastic texture it came in, not to mention the plastic swirls and what not. You will definitely have to do more sanding than you are thinking at first(stupid plastic weld spots). I did it with out looking up to see if/how anybody else did it. The second vent is actually drying right now.

Attached is a crappy cell phone pic. This is straight from a spray can before any wet-sanding/polishing in a garage in 40-50 degree weather. Considering that, it is coming out as good as you could expect.

If I were to do it again, I would at least talk to a paint shop to get a price for them to do all the prep/paint before I started sanding.

Honestly what's the point of spending 200 bucks on heat extractors if you're just going to paint them body color... Waste of money

In all honesty I kind of have to agree... I have no idea why Roush decided to create them with the texture that they did. I wasn't sure if I was going to paint them until mine arrived, and they were in pretty shit quality. With all the work that I have put in, I will not be sure it was worth it, until I finish and get them on the car.

And if I remember correctly, I saw that someone was going to offer a carbon fiber version in the future. Depending on price and quality, that would probably be the better route.

roush created them in that texture so the color of the extractors matched their graphic on the hood scoop on the RS cars and the side graphics.
