I did a track day yesterday and my Cup 2 fronts look like they might be done. This is my first time using Cup 2s on a track. Do these need to be replaced or can I use them for another track day?

One thing is clear - the tires wore so badly on the outside of the fronts that I think I need some more negative camber before the next track day.

That outer shallow groove is only 3/32" deep when new, and yours is still showing.

The photo in @Davesvt2000 's post shows that the groove is gone and he still has track time left.

I've seen guys retire their Cup 2s once the outer shoulder shows cords, and that is my plan too.

@GTP - thanks for the input. Any guidance on date codes? I picked up a 2019 GT350 last year with 780 miles on it. Date codes on the tires are 2019. I've heard that you shouldn't run the tires on the track once the date code is 5 years old, which is where I'm at. Do you think I can still track them early next year outside of the 5 year timeframe?

I am not a tire expert on any level. But I think knowing the basics is good enough for me. Things like tread wear, alignment, temperatures, rotations, inspections, etc.

I bought Mach 1 Cup 2 take-offs which are around 3 years old. Grip was fantastic compared to summer tires on track. It was like I got a new and better car.

If I needed more tires before next season, I would have no problem buying 2019 tires with up to a couple thousand street miles. Tires slowly outgas (= dry out) over time. The best way to store them is sealed up in plastic bags. Unfortunately, no take-off tires have been stored that way. The consequence of driving on older tires is that they don't have quite the grip as a new set.

I try to save money when possible since tracking is expensive. I would not take safety risks to save money. I have fun on track driving at 9/10 or less.

These are my opinions only.

I also have the cynical opinion that 10-year helmet limits, and 5-year tire limits just might be as much Corporate Greed as it is a safety issue.

Ha ha - aligned on corporate greed mandating tire and helmet shelf life...to a point. I ride motorcycles on track, as well, and am not sure I'd want to take a header in a 10 year old or older helmet.
