Need rubber boot under leather shift boot?

Stock shifter has a rubber boot underneath the leather shift boot. Is the rubber boot necessary (he asked because the original's gone missing)??

It helps prevent heat from coming up from the shifter opening, I would definitely have that under there. There should also be a couple other layers of padding under as well.
