Need help with shifter knob

I am trying to remove the shifter knob. I turned it several times counter clockwise. Nothing. I don't see any kind of nut underneath. Has any one removed one? Thanks.

I had problems with the stock shifter knob being off center when tightened. A washer to space it correctly fixed that until the MGW gets here. I do plan to reuse the shifter knob as it is the only thing I like about the shifter!
