It does let things through - light... It screens out the wind and water, etc, but mainly wind because that happens constantly when you drive.

I don't know in what war-zone that keeping a gallon of washer fluid in the car in case you run out is the right thing to do. In that rare instance you might run out of washer fluid, constantly carrying around enough to COMPLETELY refill the washer several times over is overkill. You might as well carry ten gallons of oil and a 44-gallon drum of fuel too, just in case... Maybe keep a cup-full to get you home, or better yet just deal with having no fluid (oh the humanity!!!) until you get home. This seems like the right thing to do.

There was a day when cars had wooden wheels and no windscreen or seat-belts. Nowdays it seems some people will get their car towed home if a bug gets splattered on the bumper...
Easy mate.....if you drove in winter conditions especially where salt is used on the roads you would understand what happens when the window washing solvent tank runs empty. Here in the Chicago, IL USA area I see people pulled over on the side or the road EVERY time is snows because they have run out of washer solvent and cannot see out the windscreen :)

Screens let things through, shields stop things. I'm sticking with shield is correct... :D
OK, my bad.. it all comes from not being a native English speaker. I apparently took the wrong English book back home (the British one)... Now I'm doomed.

This... also I just wondered if no warning at all or I was just missing something.

I've never even owned a car that had a low washer fluid warning. Frankly I didn't even know they existed. Maybe I'm just old fashioned but I just pop the hood every once and a while and check it and refill if necessary.

Alright, fair enough, just not something that seems like the "right thing to do" for everyone, all the time.

Can't recall I had such a warning light on any of the Fords I (or my girlfriend) owned. (maybe it was on there, but I have never seen it light up) We just have a spare bit in the trunk. Besides, you can usually tell when it's running low by the fact the the fluid jet from the sprayers isn't as strong as it is when it's still full. (It reaches less and less of your window).

there may be no alarm indeed. my last car (before the Mustangs) was a Chevy Traverse, that one had this warning. I am not sure about the Ford Explorers I used to own before the Traverse. Anyway, no big deal, it was just a general wondering...

There are many definitions for the word screen

Yes, the word can work in terms of "protecting" you or something from something/someone else

But it also works in terms of "allowing" some airflow to pass through

So calling a window on a car a windscreen can seem very counterintuitive. Especially when you can also purchase a sunscreen... which "allows" sunshine to pass through. So on one window you have a sunscreen... allowing some light to pass inside, and on another window you have a windscreen... which allows no wind to pass inside.

Cars are the one place you can really tell the difference between U.K. English and American English. Boot. Bonnet. Windscreen. Silencer. Petrol. Tyre. Accumulator. Nave plate. Etc.
