Not sure how it is in other states but in PA car dealers aren't open on Sundays so that's usually when I go and take a look at cars I'm interested in as a start. Then I go during the week to test it out.

Anyway, my 4yr old son and I drove to the nearest Ford dealership. They block off the main lot but there was an 11 v6, 14 v6, and two 15 GT premiums sitting in the repair/used lots.

Something odd happened that I totally wasn't expecting...

I was completely turned off by the black 15 which was sitting right next to the white one with two black racing stripes. Problem was that the black was covered in dirt/dust and just looked like hell. Now I know if kept clean/waxed it would look nice but I'm not hosing down the car every time I drive it.

The white definitely grew on me but I'd like to see the silver as well. Definitely not a fan of the brighter colors like red, yellow, blue, etc....and the stripes...that's another thing. I've never been a fan of stripes, mostly because kids put them on POS cars and it looks horrible...but the GT looked great with them. Never having seen a car with stripes growing up or owned one I'm curious...how do they hold up over time? Do they start to peel off or chip after 10 years or so? More difficult to clean/wax?

Personally, I think a Silver with Black stripes would look sharp!!

Anyone have one? Pics are certainly welcome!! :)

With the 11 and 14...the prices were $15 and $20 respectively but again, V6's. I know the fully loaded V8's still fetch in the 20's for those years. Definitely not as nice or refined as the 15's. Plus with the IRS, I figure it's worth the extra few grand for a 15.

Thanks

Black is a color that looks amazing when you wash it, but looks like crap 5 minutes later. It requires a lot of upkeep to look good.

I've seen tons of Ingot Silver cars here and in dealers with black stripes, they do look really good. I always thought of silver as a boring color but it's probably the best looking color for the S550.. it really highlights all the details and still looks elegant and classy.

Also, as an owner of a Shadow Black s550, I'd like to say: I'm never buying another black car for as long as I live. (unless it's a weekend toy and I can garage it 95% of the time Lol)

Forget about "hosing" a black car everytime you drive it, unless you have some gnarly water filters on your garden hose, chances are "hosing it down" will make it look even worse with all the water spots from the minerals in the water. I spend 3 hours washing my car with a pressure washer twice a week.. and about 10 minutes after I'm done it looks dirty again.

Now I'm reduced to buying Chemical Guys EcoSmart-RU waterless was & wax by the gallons and pretty much have to wipe down my entire car everytime I want to drive it.. unless I'm feeling lazy, then I say F it and go full dirt magnet.

If I could do it all over again, I would get a Magnetic.. I think it's a happy medium between white/silver/black. It shines like black, looks clean like white and in sunlight really highlights the features of the S550 like silver.

That being said however, me being the type of guy that pretty much everything I own is black just because I like it's simple elegance, never been one for bright colors.. but I've really fallen in love with Race Red.. it looks sooo good. If grabber blue was an option tho, I would of gotten that Lol.

You can do a water wash, but you just have to be quick about drying it off. I make it a habit to constantly wet the side of the car I'm not working on, just so waterspots don't settle. Then when I'm done cleaning, I get 2-3 towels, and dry the whole thing off. No more water spots with this method.

In the summer, you have to do it early morning or when the sun is setting, because good luck drying it before the sun does.

I like the waterless washes. The Ecosmart stuff is great, and Meguiars sells one as well that's readily available in stores for anyone who wants to try it out. Works really well, and leaves my car super clean. I use the waterless wash stuff even when I'm doing a traditional car wash to clean my door jambs and anything I missed on the first pass. Works really well for that.

Holy shit!! :eyebulge:

So yeah...black is out!!

The magnetic...I'd have to see in person, but it looks too close to black for my liking. I've owned a bunch of silver cars over the years...always looked clean, bascially never shows dirt. So that's what I'm leaning toward.

With the stripes...anything to know long term? Special care?

Thanks

For the reasons you stated I ordered a white convertible which was a plain palate until I added stripes which really look great. I have seen DIB and ruby red cars and they look amazing. My last few cars have been Magnetic or silver so I think I'm over that color for a while. Black looks great when it is clean and polished. I'm not a fan of yellow because I think I would tire of it quickly. Bottom line, personal decision. I "need" about 15 cars to satisfy all my needs. Then there are airplanes...addictions are expensive!

I was told with applied stripes (not painted) to stay away from "spray" type car washes, especially the DIY wands.

I can't answer on cars with stripes from the factory..

Me personally I would get it without stripes and just add on the vinyls.. it's not expensive at all and if anything goes wrong you just replace the vinyl. Ford dealers themselves usually offer vinyl stripes as add ons and they'll throw it into the price of the car if you want.

I don't know if the factory ones are painted or vinyls or even what kind of vinyl.. I'd just take it plain and flavor it my way. Like with the painted black roof option Ford offers now, I think that's a terrible idea.. first of black paint is a giant pain in the ass, second if you ever get tired/bored of the look you have to paint it. I rather add on gloss black vinyl to the roof myself or in this case, the stripes.. that way not only is it more flexible to your needs/liking you can have full customization on the color/type/style.

You want Gloss Black? Flat Black? Satin Black? Metallic Black? because from the factory you're stuck with what they have Lol.

What is DIB?

Vinyl?...Like the things you stick on windows over the holidays for decoration??

Not sure about gloss/flat/satin/etc...I think I'd need to see them side by side. But again, whatever I get it needs to last a LOOONNNGG time. I don't want it looking like hell after a couple decades of being in the garage.

Thanks

I thought red, yellow or orange would be cool, considering its a Mustang. But there wasn't much red or yellow selection, and I had a hard time warming up to orange. I think the orange paint needs a bit more red hue.

I did see an F150 in Race Red on the dealer lot, and it looked great.

There is pros / cons to colors

easy to maintain , OCD?
visibility , by other drivers, and the police.
fashion / re-sale value
climate, down south, lighter paint > darker paint

Stickers / stripes is more a personality thing. Bling or no bling? Personally I prefer my car be more of a sleeper. I'd bolt on a Whipple, and you wouldn't know it.

Kind of but not exactly.. talking automotive 3M vinyl Lol.. the top layer looks like paint and the bottom is durable and protects your car paint. It can last a long time if you take care of it.. at least 5 years.. at that point you just pay another $300-400 and get it redone.

The only real concern with vinyl stripes is uneven ware on the paint. Since the paint under the vinyl is protected by the vinyl itself, once the vinyl is removed it may look different to the rest of the paint which has been exposed to sunlight/weather for years and years.. but a good polish should take care of that.

Magnetic is not dark like black. It's darker shade of silver but looks better than silver in the sun. More depth. Mine hides dirt pretty well.

A sleeper 2015 Mustang GT??

I see what you mean about the stripes though. But at least one the white it seemed to give it some badass personality.
