I recently installed J-Pipes from Solo Performance on my V6 with Flowmaster Outlaws and an H-Pipe to reduce the drone (it is absolutely terrible at 2k RPM). After installing initially, it did quiet down the interior quite a bit while driving around town, but the actual problem spot wasn't affected at all. I figured it had to do with the length of the setup, and after adjusting it multiple times I could never find a solution.

Has anyone else experimented with J-Pipes on their car? I consulted the charts I found online for our cars yet even at the set range it was never affected in the slightest. It's pretty frustrating, especially after the amount of money I spent to get them and for it to not make a difference. If anyone has any tips or suggestions on what to do please let me know. Thanks.

First you gotta find the frequency of the sound wave you are trying to cancel:

f = RPM * pulses/rev * (1/60)

f = 2000*3*(1/60) = 100Hz

So the frequency of the sound of a 6 cylinder at 2000 RPMs is 100Hz - Now you have to figure out the length of the sound wave for the resonator.

wavelength = speed of sound / frequency

wavelength = (343m/s)/(100Hz) = 3.43m

3.43m = ~ 135inches

inches divide by 4 (so the wave can bounce back and cancel itself out) is 33.75 inches.

So your J pipe will need to be around 33.5 to 34 inches for it to work in the range you want. This all changes based on weather and altitude though as the speed of sound changes depending on those factors but it should get you close.

If this doesn't work you can download an app on your phone to find the frequency of the sound that you're trying to cancel. Once you find that frequency you can still use the same formula to figure out the length of the J pipe that you need.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I did try setting my J-Pipes to 34 inches already and absolutely nothing changed in the car. I also tried 28 inches just to see if anything happens and nothing was affected either. The drone is gone at the 1700 rpm range and above 2200 and neither were affected no matter what length I tried. Also, I did try downloading an app to test the Hz but I could not find one for an iPhone on the App Store.

I find it weird your car has drone at 2000 rpms. Normally V6 drone is in the 2500-3000 range. Maybe there is some weird resonance issue happening with your setup?

I find it weird your car has drone at 2000 rpms. Normally V6 drone is in the 2500-3000 range. Maybe there is some weird resonance issue happening with your setup?
I've thought about that too. The exhaust shop that installed the Flowmasters and H-Pipe mostly does truck installs, but it was the only shop I had access to at the time so it's very possible they messed something up. I didn't have much faith in them to begin with but didn't have much of a choice.

When I was looking around the other day, I noticed the left exhaust tip is actually sitting against the rear valance and neither of them are all that centered. Both wiggled a little too when I pushed them up and down, but again I don't know much about how they should be so I don't know how tight "normal" is. I'll try and take a video of how the car sounds tomorrow while driving to work and see if I can explain it better.

Mine used to be that way. Now after the J-Pipes there's no drone at 1600-1800 and no drone 2200+. Only at 2000-2100 range, but that was the problem to begin with and the whole reason I installed them in the first place.

Thanks for the suggestion. Honestly at this point if I can't get the J-Pipes to work out I'm just going to install GT takeoffs and sell the system. It was $200 + $80 install for the J-Pipes and I'm really just tired of throwing money at this thing.

Also, I tried recording a video of the drone today and I was very surprised to find out you can barely even tell there is any on video. The blinker was louder than the drone was, yet in cabin even if I turn my music up to 25 I can still hear it and it's impossible to have a conversation because of how loud it is inside the car.
